I don't get that either, but what really confuses me is how some are able to get a driver's license. I came to the US on an H1-B visa and it took them 18 months from I passed the tests to get around to issue me a license. They gave me a temporary license and I had to extend that several times. BTW, I am still here because I received a Green Card through the Diversity Visa Lottery. I had sent in the application about three years in a row before I moved to the US, then my name was picked in the lottery a few months after I arrived on the H1-B. Soren Madsen

That may be state dependent or there may have been another reason it took so long. Our new licenses arrived very quickly. Well done on the DV Lottery - Green Cards are worth their weight in gold pressed latinum.

It is easier! Now it is legal to come through the legal channels or illegally. Oops, forgot, US cannot use the term illegal allien anymore (political agenda)... hmmm, what to call them...? Undocumented residents?

Here in Arizona, we call them "targets." We're not allowed to barbeque them, else we'd call 'em "carnitas."

Interesting. I don't care about moving there. I just need a US passport to get rid of these visa hassles.

Don't worry about a Visa... with our current govt you can just go to Mexico, walk across the boarder, and then you are fine. Pretty much a citizen :)

A little wig on my head would make it go down by 20. Rest I can manage with my slender figure. Great, we are talking about illegal sneak in on interwebs. Now what was that agency (or whatever) that knows every breath you take in US?

Pretty much every Indian wife I've met here has told me the same. That they've never been as independent in India as they are here (and these are women who lived in Bombay, Bangalore, New Delhi etc.) Of course some of it is probably just them maturing better and worrying less about what their family thinks about what they do.

            Regards, Nish

My observation of Indian couples, families in Canada is that the lady does not want to let go the (free, less busy, silent, no relatives around, machines availability - vacuum, washing machine, dryer) life here. I sometimes call it laziness on their part. ;P

Don't worry, I am not coming there to steal jobs. :) I can do that from India. ;) I am interested in knowing affects of recent economic conditions on immigration restrictions. Has it become more stricter or easier to sneak in(legally).

After 6+ years of waiting to get a green card, you need to wait 5 years to apply for US citizenship. Look for other ways to ease your visa difficulties.

I have never been able to figure out how people move out of India without going abroad on study visa or going on a work permit on current job and then leaving. For Singapore, I can learn Mandarin.

Gujaratis and Punjabis are enterprising people. They fly to Madrid, then to Mexico City and then get to the US border and sneak across. They avoid having to go to college, earn a CS degree and come to US as code coolies. Some are known to have even paid off some California or other border state farmers to get documentation that showed that they worked on the farms when the Migratory Farm Worker Legalization Program was around.

This year the H1-B was filled within a week (65000 visas). That is for entry from October.

No. Women can hire household help on the cheap in India. Try paying for a maid in the US! So Indian women want to move back to India and get lazy and fat so long as their husbands can support them in the style they are accustomed to while in the US!

Well, it was filled in a day but it took a week to process and declare it. 2 or 3 years ago (not sure which) it didn't get filled until late November. I have no idea why but I find the whole immigration process fascinating so try to keep up with what goes on. Sad, I know. :)

If you want a Passport that'll allow you to visit various countries without getting a visitor Visa through Visa waiver programs, then immigrate to Singapore. That'd be your quickest option :-) You'd need to learn Chinese and/or Tamil to survive there though.

Got that wrong - not a word of either (I do struggle with Singlish sometimes) and have no problems surviving here. Half out team are indian dev who have done precisely what you suggested.

What! That's crazy. So if I am not using any of the facilities in the country, I am not even getting paid in my US bank account, why should I pay taxes?

No that's right, if you are taxed less than the US amount locally they want the difference. I'm astonished there are US expats employed in low tax countries!
