Foolish to think it was terrorism. Re-entry is very dangerous and the shuttle was damaged during take off. As far as it turning political, you have already started turning it into a political issue. Tim Smith I'm going to patent thought. I have yet to see any prior art.

This is awful. It will probably mean the end of the International Space Station, the end of the shuttle program, and will be a significant political issue, what with having an Israeli on board. I am loath to hear the politicians get on another "terrorist" bandwaggon. And what gets me is, that while I'm feeling very sad for the men and women and their families, I can't help but feel angry at NASA for bringing this onto themselves--while space flight has a definite risk associated with it, NASA is yet another agency bogged down in beauracracy (yes, some of it imposed by our government), infighting, and political sabotage. It's track record in the last 10 years is attrocious--the QA alone has been degraded from "perfection" to "acceptable risk", and suppliers are out to make a buck regardless of the life lost. The whole agency thing should be torn down and privatized. Besides the chapter in Feynman's book on the Challenger disaster, Chris Kraft's book Flight is quite excellent for reading about what the space program used to be, the politics that brought down NASA, and what it needs to rise to again. Marc Help! Anyone following this? As the Space Shuttle was landing it disappeared from radars. It seems like it has broken up on decent. They are warning people to avoid any potential debris around the Dallas/Fort Worth area which is the last place they had contact. cheers, Chris Maunder

A piece of the external fuel tank came off and nicked the wing. From Fox News: "Leroy Cain, the lead flight director in Mission Control, had assured reporters Friday that engineers had concluded that any damage to the wing was considered minor and posed no safety hazard".

My heart goes out to the family of the crew members :rose: It's a terrible tragedy, just like the Challenger in 1986. Of course there will be a delay in NASA manned spaceflight programs, there will be a political issue too but I don't think they will abandon the shuttle flights. They are the only way to bring up astronauts to the ISS and that international station will be finished. But from now on all staff working on the ISS will remember what price has to be paid ...

The external tank is coated with a very, very lightweight heat and flame retardant foam. I've actually held the stuff. It seems to me and my unscientific reasoning, that this is unlikely to have damaged the wing. Marc Help! I'm an AI running around in someone's f*cked up universe simulator.

Very sad. This is not good for the ISS. I can imagine this will either put the space shuttle out of use for a while or all together.

Yep, opened the TV , didn't listen and watched closely, and I just heard that. Bummer! There's goes the shuttle program, and probably general space exploration for a long while! and NASA will have a hard time recuperating! Double Bummer! And the poor bastards stuck on the space stations might evacuate and not go back for a long time either! Tripple Bummer! Max.

Not while we have Iraq and North Korea to contend with. The shuttle is the only thing we have that can lift heavy spy satellites into orbit. I hope this diaster puts enough pressure on NASA / DOD to replace the shuttles with something safer and more modern.

What are you trying to say? The US media would try to blame the muslim? As a 7th generation US citizen, I can honestly say that I beleive most Americans would not think of trying to pin the blame on the muslim. The liberal world media on the other hand, does not accuratley reflect the true sincerity and feelings of the "typical American". We are not as stupid and paranoid as the media tends to portray us. Kind regards, Tim
