Chris Maunder wrote: that did Bugger All As this is the soapbox and all.. Do you Australians use the British meaning for "Bugger" rather than the American version (something that bugs you) It always amazes me when the innocent American version gets used in TV and Films - you'd think there'd be someone who'd point out that the word ends up having quite a different meaning to a British person watching it. I'm pretty certain there's a reference to "those little buggers" (talking about children, I think) in Monsters Inc -- Help me! I'm turning into a grapefruit!

So what exactly does a "debugger" do over there then? :~ BW "Gandalf. Yes. That is what they used to call me. Gandalf the Grey. *I* am Gandalf the White." - Gandalf the White

As a Pom, I don't know for certain, but I would think Austrailians would respect their heritage as British convicts ;P and swear in English, rather than American. That certainly seems to be the case with their top entertainer, Kevin "Bloody" Wilson. Some time back, there was an American bug-tracking package called "Bugger". They changed the name when someone pointed out the British meaning of the word. Personally, I though the name was perfect - it's first thing I say when I find a bug! :-D OK, only when I'm in polite company!

Here's an ad for Toyota [^]in Australia. Bugger is a word that has many meanings. It's the context that is important. Just like the word 'bastard' which can be used in so many ways. anger: You bastard difficulty: It's a bit of a bastard to get done friendship: How're ya goin' ya ugly bastard? intelligence: He's a smart bastard plural : What are you bastards up to? Hmm, I'm guessing as one of them says "phew, bugger me" that it implies that you do indeed take the same meaning as I would. Maybe it's just considered less offensive over there, or something (though again, it's context - someone saying "bugger me" to a child would be totally different) -- Help me! I'm turning into a grapefruit!

I didn't know that but it strikes me that the perfect answer is Guinness. Try "going on a bender" after a few pints and you'll see what I mean! After that, all they'll be good for is pizza and kebabs... ;) Anna :rose: www.annasplace.me.uk
