As a Pom, I don't know for certain, but I would think Austrailians would respect their heritage as British convicts ;P and swear in English, rather than American. That certainly seems to be the case with their top entertainer, Kevin "Bloody" Wilson. Some time back, there was an American bug-tracking package called "Bugger". They changed the name when someone pointed out the British meaning of the word. Personally, I though the name was perfect - it's first thing I say when I find a bug! :-D OK, only when I'm in polite company!

Here's an ad for Toyota [^]in Australia. Bugger is a word that has many meanings. It's the context that is important. Just like the word 'bastard' which can be used in so many ways. anger: You bastard difficulty: It's a bit of a bastard to get done friendship: How're ya goin' ya ugly bastard? intelligence: He's a smart bastard plural : What are you bastards up to? It goes on and on (and on...) cheers, Chris Maunder

Hmm, I'm guessing as one of them says "phew, bugger me" that it implies that you do indeed take the same meaning as I would. Maybe it's just considered less offensive over there, or something (though again, it's context - someone saying "bugger me" to a child would be totally different) -- Help me! I'm turning into a grapefruit!
