McAfee Sucks!!!!

why my company(not joeswammi.com but my real job) uses this unstable resource hog I will never know. We are stuck with it for two more years two!!!!:mad::mad::mad: we are licenced for 4.x and nothing higher(I think I better check on that come to think of it) It might catch a virus but it can't delete it, clean it or anything, this W32/Opaserv.worm[^] has been the latest to piss me off. heheh shocker. We used McAfee up till 4.01? Then it ate our Exchange server. After a long battle of Microsoft pointing fingers at McAfee and McAfee pointing fingers back at Microsoft, we finally got the server back up and running. We have switched over to Trend, and let me tell you. Talk about install and forget. I couldn't be more happy with trend. It just plain works. We use it for more than 1500 desktops as well as server and mail. If you can, I would seriously consider digtching McAfee and going with Trend.

Maybe I'll buy the licenses myself to save me the trouble of listening to my users and wasting my time:-D PS. Took me 2 months to figure out to exclude scanning the spool32.exe and spoolss.dll, which was cause some users to freeze when printing, admitted bug on McAfee knowledgebase:mad: Think I'll checkout Trend. Would Trend work on a workgroup(I don't have a local server):mad:? Later,

Yeah it took me about the same to figure out the spoolxx problem myself. Even after calling McAfee's tech(dumb) support. (you would think that they would have known about the issue, but they didn't) X| I think that was one of the reasons it ate my Exchange server. (BTW I think I still have DS entries for the McAfee box, I couldn't ever get rid of them, raw mode doesn't show them, but when you do a DS consistancy check, it pops up. Weird.) Anyways.. It will work in a workgroup. You will just have to manually touch each client to install it. (Rather than put the 'auto check to see if it is installed checker' in a login script) It uses a IIS server to relay updates etc and it uses a relatively small memory foot print. The only sucky thing about it is pricing. You have to purchase separate licenses for Server vs Workstation vs Exchange. All AV softwares are like that though. But you get past that, and it just works. We have seen absolutely no nimda on our net since we installed it. It just cleans it as it happens. (and barks a ton) You can put it on a shared server, but it is best to have it on it's own. (for outbreaks and massive updates) A neat feature I like is it has outbreak function, so if a nasty hits your site, you can force scans on all computers that have it installed on it. This goes for Servers, Workstations, Exchange etc... Rocken kewl av.

Saying McAfee tech support sucks is an understatement. Even though we've not had any major problems with the product, the support is enough for us to reconsider using them again, especially since our contract is up with them in June. We had problems with the 4.x corp addition with Exchange. It would miss large volumns coming in... (nimda at the time, course that was a while ago, mabye they fixed it up)

I ditched it after version 5 and Windows 2000 stopped getting along, so you have my sympathy. :rose: Norton isn't much better though..after installing Norton Pro 2002 on my new laptop (it was bundled with it) the laptop wouldn't boot half the time. System Restore (WinXP :-D) saved me a reformat. These days I use AVG anti-virus...it's simple, fast and stable. Plus free for personal users. :) Anna :rose: www.annasplace.me.uk

You probably have more control over your users than I. I don't have a local server and am working in the Electrical Wholesale industry and this company should rethink it's priority on it's IT side. Getting the funding for new workstations is not a priority, which sucks for me. Later,

At my last company we used McAfee 4.5 and it was very reliable, when IS actually bothered to update the signature files. It was probably running on a hundred NT4 and W2K systems. I'm now using McAfee 7.0 on XP and it's been excellent. (Norton hosed both my and my father's XP systems. He now uses eTrust which is perfect for him but I needed something with a little more control like shutting off scanning of my build directories).
