    So, I've not posted forever. I am about to embark on a new endeavour, and thought I should share it here. After five years working for the company that bought mine, and eight or something working with my current boss, I am leaving, to work for a local company instead. I vacillated for a while, but eventually I was told that my job was on the line because our website is slow ( in heated terms ) and that was the last straw for me. Why ? Because I predicted this issue a year ago and fought to be allowed to work on a solution and was not allowed to. Although things are better, they still have four employees working on four different things, support asking the same questions over and over and taking up developers time, constantly shifting targets and 'urgent' deadlines that are never physically possible to meet, and the allure of working from home wasn't doing it for me any more. And I really didn't feel that Dallas was worth the time away from home, any more. So, in to the wide blue wonder, I go.

    Don't want to compare my situation with yours but starting next August I think I am just going to take off for six months and see what may come of it. Maybe finish some ventures, who knows. Regardless of the way it turns out for me ... good luck for you. Sometimes small companies can be harder than larger ones.

        Thanks. I've started a company before, I am looking now to have more family time. However, school fees mean I do need to keep working full time :)

            Have that situation now - and we can debate solutions: We settle on the better of the two, a mixture, or something else altogether. Since he's arrived, I.T.'s moral has improved immeasurably and appreciation by the rest of the company has also increased tremendously. Maybe it's because we get things done.                 *grin* is that a sig, or an example of what you hate ? I am looking forward to having developers for managers. When your manager does not equate what you do with black magic, it helps a lot. It means they know what is possible.

                Heh. It could be a .sig, given the number of times I've fought that battle here in the last couple months. I'm apparently now "that obstructionist guy who just says no all the time." If you don't expect the guy with 35 years under his belt as a programmer to disagree with the head of sales ($boss-1), you're doing something wrong. The problem with this particular PHB is that he knows a smattering of (hold your breath) WebDNA, so he thinks he's a master technologist. I swear if I hear one more question that starts with "Why don't you just..." I'm going to flip my shrimp.

                    Well, I went for five jobs. One said they were looking for someone cheaper. One was working with SQL Server and a custom back end web server they wrote to escape ASP.NET. I said no to that one. Another is using WebSQL, HTML and js to write an app that you download, and it gets cached and runs in your mobile browser. I am doing part time work for them. The other two, one was a start up, really cool guys, working with face recognition in WPF. I really liked the idea of that one. The other is a big consulting firm, working the full Microsoft stack, doing custom work, visiting clients to work on site as well as in the office. That seemed the better career choice, esp as I've put a lot of time in to my SQL skills of late, so that's the one I took.

                        *grin* I barely use OSX nowadays. Yeah, I'd like the chance to do more mobile stuff. I am doing some jquery mobile, that's about it right now.

                                    Yeah, I think so, a good family move, too. I got a couple of contracts on the way, too, which was nice. A tester just contacted me to wish me all the best. She was the only one who did, so that's nice.

                                        Ultimately, the wireless internet situation made me make a call. If things were better overall, I'd have hired an office. As it stood, not being able to stand still, b/c of Telstra, is the reason I had to move one way or the other. The situation overall is why I moved in the direction I did.
