Way to deter flamers

Hi, Maybe one way to stop flamers is to mark item with flame icon or something so as to deter serious developers from wasting their time reading and albeit answering to flames. This would of course mean a little more work for chris and other guys who help admin this site. What do you guys think?

I was thinking the same thing. Appoint a group of firefighters that have the right to flag any posting as a flame. The little note icon to the left of the subject is currently displaying one of two states indicating a registered or unregistered user. Add in a third state indicating that this is a flame message. The posts are still there to be read, but you can tell quickly that it is a flame and don't need to bother reading it. Moderated boards always run the risk of having a "bad" moderator who simply deleted messages that disagree with his/her opinion or prove him/her wrong. Doing things this way keep the messages around, and simply flag them.

Righto David, This seems to be a good way to handle the problem without curbing users freedom and saving developers from wasting good time in reading irrelevant stuff. I think this website has to come up with some kind of a plan to handle flamers before things get a wee bit outta hand.:)

Find the cause, obviously some subjects or questions throw people into a boil such as myself. Get to the root, flamers are usually started by the few minority, who I'm sure are out to start a flame war. Take the guy slagging off Windows, I really don't think hes doing it out of spite, do to the international boundaries the context is lost in the message, by doing he has started a flame war. 5% of the people to come here are not programmers at all, probably minors, or schoolies. "Nip it in the bud" as the saying goes... and dont let the people who supply the fuel start the fire. Crikey all I did was to come here to show off my skills, and 'help' others - I now wondering if this really a good place to submit code... Anyway enough said. P*ssed off - Norm

If I was a bored troublemaker and heard there was a site where you could get your messages marked with flaming icons, I would be there in a flash (if you know what I mean...). cheers, Chris Maunder

I'd have to agree with who ever said it first, just ignore them. I can think of no worse thing to do to someone than show complete and utter indifference towards them and their opinions. Fact is, I like Windows and I also like Linux... wouldn’t trade one for the other. Windows puts food on the table, and Linux lets me relax and have some fun. Perhaps if there were ratings on forum posts and a /.-style "Browse at level" filter control, we could just choose to browse at a level that would hide flames from our view (I get pretty tired of having to scroll down several screens to get past all the crap). CP already has the ability to rate articles, so it shouldn't be too tough to add a "rate this post" button. It would be better if only registered readers could rate things (articles too). He was allying himself to science, for what was science but the absence of prejudice backed by the presence of money? --- Henry James, The Golden Bowl

Perhaps a few well known contributors to Code Project can also be designated as moderators, and then be allowed to delete questionable posts, this way not just limiting it to chris and the other helpers. -Tyler Rhodes
