When was the last time you had to change a fuse? Last night a bulb blew in one of my lamps, on replacing the lamp didn't work. This morning I changed the fuse, none in the house, and when I thought about it I could not think the last time I had to replace a fuse. Yes, I checked the old bulb in a different lamp and it [0] didn't work and [1] rattled when shook.

Couple o' months ago - it's an old house, and the fuse box is mostly just that: real wire fuses. One of the halogen spots went, and took the fuse with it. Now all my spots have been changed to LEDs and I don't have that problem any more.

We have switch fuses in our box, so you never have to change a wire - or very, very rarely. About five-six years ago, we had a problem with the fuse box in Budapest, but that was fuped wiring and needed an electrician - it was 50:50 which side of the fuse box needed work and if it should be the electricity company or me to do the work, so I let him make the call rather then me go boom.

The sparky fitted a switch fuse as a plug-in replacement for one circuit when we had the bathroom converted (since it was a new shower installation it had to be done to building regs) but the others are the old bakelite two-prongs-and-a-bit-of-wire jobbies. I'm kinda scared to think about upgrading the whole fuse box as that would involve modern building regs as well, and that would probably mean a complete overhaul of the house electrics. They aren't broken, so I ain't fixing them...

Check with a sparky, but to the best of my knowledge he can replace the whole fuse box independently. As long as the wiring is sound, it does not need to be brought up to current standards. Similarly if you want to put in a new loop or sub-loop - as with your bathroom - only that part needs to be up to date.

We have an early-80s fuse box; not quite bakelite but neither those new-fangled ultra-thin fuses either. I got mates rates from a sparky when we put in new wiring in the kitchen. I did most of the wiring and he gave it the all-clear eyeball. He did some leak tests in the fuse box and was not impressed with the sparky who fitted it before we bought the house (in short, nuttin' to do wiv me guv, 'onest). I remember him saying if you don't look too closely it'll be okay. He's since moved to Vancouver Island, possibly to put distance between him and any detonation.

Unless you count a few strings of christmas lights that continued not to work after I tried a fuse swap I don't think I ever have. I had a breaker trip for semi-unexplained reasons a few years ago; but that was a one off. (Only semi-unexplained because while the circuit is running near capacity I've no idea what might've pushed it over then.) Before that I'd need to go back to the first few years after my parents first got a microwave when it and the coffee pot were sharing a breaker that couldn't run power at the same time.

Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, waging all things in the balance of reason? Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful? --Zachris Topelius Training a telescope on one’s own belly button will only reveal lint. You like that? You go right on staring at it. I prefer looking at galaxies. -- Sarah Hoyt
