I'm glad somebody got that. I was hoping I wasn't the only programmer versed in literature that ends sentences with punctuation other than the semicolon. :)

I'm not unfamiliar with Melville... He wrote "Shamu does San Diego" didn't he? Or was that the video I rented last weekend? It is ok for women not to like sports, so long as they nod in the right places and bring beers at the right times.

well, 'they' CAN'T say 'we need another gimmic to sell you an OS you don't need', now can they ? If it's so intelligent, why do we both not like it ? If it's so easy to use, why didn't we just love it at first use ? Christian No offense, but I don't really want to encourage the creation of another VB developer. - Larry Antram 22 Oct 2002

Her attendants tell me that she is becoming very skilled at weaving baskets from dried river reeds and fronds, and seems to enjoy the fuzzy stuffed animals her friends send her. Her drooling has cleared up, and she's almost mastered feeding herself now that the twitching has subsided. She still occasionally codes in VB, but the doctors are optimistic.:-D It is ok for women not to like sports, so long as they nod in the right places and bring beers at the right times.

Hi all, My management is going to buy few more OS'es. They are planning to buy a few addnl Win 2K's. But since Win 2K and XP are same cost, I thought we should go for WinXP. But I find it very hard to convince them. What should I tell them ? Or do you people, also think Win 2K is ok ? Can you please tell me why you would prefer XP over 2K or if not why ? If you design anything with a UI you would be advised to ensure your product supports Visual Styles correctly - and to do that you need to develop under XP (besides: UxTheme.dll is fun to write for ;)). There's also the support issue - XP will have a longer lifetime than 2k, and it seems harder to break an XP box (I'm rather good at killing 2K boxes  ). XP also starts up faster. :) Anna :rose: www.annasplace.me.uk

Smitha Vijayan wrote: For that, they'd say a test machine with XP is enough And the biggest issue is my superior keeps saying that, a lot of people still use non-XP OS Believe, me a test machine isn't enough - custom controls need to be refactored to support Visual Styles, and doing that on a test box isn't generally a good idea unless they want it turned onto a dev machine most of the time. ;) The target platform shouldn't be an issue either. We still target NT 4.0 - but you won't find anyone developing using it! All our developers run XP, and the test machines are ghosted to NT/2000/XP as appropriate. We do have a spare box or two available in case we do need to debug a 2K/NT specific problem, but it's not happened so far. Smitha Vijayan wrote: I'm rather good at killing 2K boxes I've never busted an XP installation but there's one file on a 2K box which will cause an instant blue screen if it get's damaged - the system hive (not backed up by 2000). My first 2000 box died that way after a bad sector landed in exactly the same way. I also had a box at home which had big problems with 2000 and was always blue screening. In contrast, my two XP boxes (a Xeon desktop at work and a Duron laptop at home) seem rock solid and I've had no trouble that System Restore couldn't get me out of. :) Anna :rose: www.annasplace.me.uk

I want to be able to reinstall my OS as many times as I want without any limits. I have had instances where I have had to do a fresh install of Windows, darn near weekly. (Partly my fault). I have XP on the new family computer and find it to be a lot better than mine, but the H-Ware is better also. Regardz Colin J Davies

I'd then suggest *not* to activate XP...let it run for as long as it can go without activation...take that time to diagnose whatever problems you were having that forced you to reinstall the OS. Once you know your machine is stable and you won't have to reinstall in a week, then you can activate it. Activation doesn't have to be done right away, which (I find) is a mistake a lot of people make.

Paul Watson, on Sports - 2/10/2003Yep - if the system hive gets corrupted by a bad sector or whatever that's it - instant blue screen. Even worse, if the evil "Automatically reboot after a crash" option is enabled (the default) you're into an infinite cycle of reboots and BSODs. X| Anna :rose: www.annasplace.me.uk
