Plausible explanation[^] The only thing going against it as far as I can see is they still haven't found any wreckage, which I assume they would have done by now.

Not necessarily: if he is right and the pilot turned it and the autopilot continued from there then it had 7 hours of fuel on board...that's a heck of a long way at 777 cruising speed, and you end up with such a massive area to search it's like trying to find a single seat cushion somewhere in France with a team of 100! Don't forget that if it crashed into the sea somewhere along that line, most of the plane is going to the bottom - only small floating items will be visible. And the currents / winds could take them a long way in a week.

Not really. For example Aeroperu Flight 603 crashed on 2 October 1996 and it took 2 to 3 months to find the wreckage and the black box if i am not wrong. All it took was to use the right equipment. You can never say for sure how long it takes to find a airplane wreckage especially in water. Ty NatGeo and Air Crash Investigation ;)

I actually doubt this to be an accident.

Problem is, no one has claimed responsibility. And that's unusual: I would have expected several groups to have said "we did it" by now if it was deliberate. But with total silence from the usual suspects, accident looks more and more likely.

true, but if I was a terrorist I would make the families of those on the plane suffer as long as I could, so in that light, they might want to wait. But as long as they don't find the thing, no one really knows...

Terrorists don't care about the families: they want the fear that their existence and apparent abilities can generate - and they only get that via publicity. Without that fear they don't stand any chance of achieving their long term aims. No attribution == no publicity == not worth doing as far as they are concerned!

Lots have disappeared over the years[^] Perhaps, like the Uruguayan plane in the 70's, the passengers are sitting in a remote are eating each other.

Perhaps you would but that isn't how most or even all terrorists groups work.
