I'm pleased to announce Salmon. It's Agile, like the fish, but you swim up the Waterfall. Each minor release is called a spawn, with new code lines called Fingerlings, and each branch called a Brandling. The central repository is called Roe. :-\ Simple

But do you have to release it in cans?

A reasonable facsimile is enough, although Spawn-Masters recommend attaching an actual ring-pull to the packet. Software made using Salmon is particularly suitable for the "Sandwich" model, and works well with the JCucumber web language.

And does that mean that the software can't bloat - I mean, salmon are tapered at the front and back so if you release the can full of the "nose end" first then work your way down the fishy software you end up at a nice thin "tail" as the product starts to die...

Ah, I can see you've read the book, "Salmon:-How To Use The Net Productively".

Drowning your software probably won't help. Except for iTunes.

I agree about iTunes. I installed it because my wife wanted to transfer some music to her iSomething device. Apple went ahead and installed some other POS software without asking that started giving error messages when the machine would start. I got rid of the offending software and my wife has yet to use iTunes so I will probably remove it also.

But in order to fly, it needs to scale well across multiple streams.

I am afraid this could lead to very bad code smells coming from unused code, uninitialized variables, etc.

If only iTunes had used the junior version of Salmon, called 'Baked Beans'. It's specially designed for utilities which depend on the main branch. Spawn-Masters hold a 'toast' meeting, in which the 'beans' projects are poured onto the developers in an even layer. There is no good reason why iTunes should comprise 150 MB, not even the fact that it restricts your new Beatles album to that one, particular PC for all time. Or an approved Apple thing, unless you use Linux. It used to be possible to use these thingies with Linux until Apple restricted them to 'ornament' level.
