Discussing Columbia with some friends and one guy said a popular theory for Challenger was: The Challenger crew were in a capsule (ok yes so the theory breaks down on the very first few words) that survived the explosion (another hole) and it plunged into the sea. But nobody thought to go check (err ok) and so the Challenger crew actually died of suffocation eventually as they bobbed about the Atlantic. I just agreed as arguing it would have been so impossible.

It's perhaps not so false. I've heard info saying some of the astronauts survived in an intact part of the shuttle cabin till the impact on the Ocean.

I know where he got this one from. The front section of Challenger had reinforcement in case of damage to the rear section and the crew had emergency breathing sets. When NASA found the breathing sets they discovered that the crew had been using them during the time it took the cabin section to impact. There was air left in the breather sets. :(( Elaine The tigress is here :-D
