Dont you know that DOS doesnt work on Mondays? Unless you've got N-DOS or an early IBM DOS.

Swedes aren't the only ones, Rickard. I spent 7 years supporting DOS or DOS-like retail Point Of Sale (POS) systems, and have been noticing how other stores and chains do things. The vast majority of this huge market are still running DOS or text-mode UNIX systems. At most they are upgrading the look to put a window up on the screen, but it's only a graphical front end to a DOS program. In most cases the programs haven't been revisited for 10 years or more, and are long overdue for a complete redesign using modern techniques and languages. But the vendors just keep adding features and bug fixes to their antiquated DOS products, and sucking their customers dry financially with support contracts. It is ok for women not to like sports, so long as they nod in the right places and bring beers at the right times.

Damnit, can't they realize that MS f***ING DOS is nothing today!!! Why? I mean, so many MS examples have you going into DOS* to use some tool for which nobody took the time to write a front end. Or to use some compiler or linker switch that isn't in the IDE. *oh, excuse me. Console mode Marc Help! I'm an AI running around in someone's f*cked up universe simulator.

Explain to me how, when I run "cmd" from the Start menu, this isn't DOS. Isn't this what's called "console" mode? If it looks like DOS, smells like DOS, and tastes like DOS, then it probably IS DOS. Maybe I'm missing something here. Marc Help! I'm an AI running around in someone's f*cked up universe simulator.

Rickard Andersson wrote: If you have Windows why use DOS? Make a Win32 Console apps instead of a damn DOS app!! Dude, simple answer: no problems. Almost any hardware combination will do. If its a 10 year old 486, it still runs dos. But it wont run a W2k console application. And, who knows how to program a console application? Doing DOS screen paintings is a easy job. Any hundreds of applications are written for DOS, bugfixed for many years and now they run. Rewritting them would cost lots of money and bring nothing.

Ah yes.. POS systems and DOS. Fortunately, the company which I work for, develops and sells (directly or through reseller) Windows based POS systems. I'm currently working on the next major release of it. People have no problem spending a few bucks on personal hardware. It's just a matter of saving up for a few months - for some not even that. However, a company don't have that luxury. If they have a perfectly working system, then why on earth should they upgrade to something they don't need? The costs aren't just the price for the hardware, but for the guy who installs it, the possibly new software, the training of personell for the new system, etc. As for doing graphics and stuff on DOS, I think that's a trait of masters. Consider writing a simple 3d-demo. In Windows et al you just fire up DirectX or OpenGL, use the already debugged and ready to use toolkit and you're done. In DOS you'd probably have to write all that yourself. You really have to work it bit by bit on DOS, which is something that requires far more attention of the programmer. I'm not saying we should all go back to DOS, but if it works for someone, let that someone use it. You don't have to. :) -- "And God said, Let us make man in our image"
