Why the UK doesn't need a Homeland Defence Department

We've got 390,000 registered Jedi on hand! "The number of Star Wars fans who gave their religion as "Jedi" – because of an Internet campaign running at the time of the census – was 390,000, or 0.7 per cent of the population." http://news.independent.co.uk/uk/this\_britain/story.jsp?story=378006

This is an example of religeous persecution. Mr Cook added: "Some 390,000 people reported that they were Jedi. I think it was not a particularly serious answer by someone who had a good idea but I think it encouraged people to fill in their census forms. "That can only be a good thing. I think there are other reasons why something should be classed as a religion, rather than a group of people getting together on the Internet to arrange it." I wonder what the good reason is for people believing in other religions such as Christianity or Islam ? Regardz Colin J Davies

While I will argue politics till I am sick I let religion alone because it is such a personal thing. On the other hand I don't diagree with your appraisal very much. I just consider that the silliness of beliving you are part of a religion based on the immagination of one George Lucas, is not a valid reason to say this isn't the folks religion. For the reasons most of those 390,000 choose to do that (excluding those who honestly believe themselves to follow the Jedi code or whatever) they should be fined at least £1,000 or imprisoned for no less than a week. In this information age I find it detestable that people are using it to defraud and ridicule something as serious and important as a national census.

I mostly agree with you, but I don't understand why a national census asks about the religion. It's a private matter, after all.
Angels banished from heaven have no choice but to become demons Cowboy Bebop
They ask because it is important to a lot of people. If for example 51% of the population say they are Christian then the government would need to adjust what they say and do accordingly to meet their wishes. A census is about collecting anonymous statistical data about an entire country's population; fat lot of good that is if people openly boast about lying on it. Messing with any part of the census process (lying, intimidation, etc) is a criminal offence, I'm just curious as to why they are not prosecuting these 390K individuals if they openly admit to committing fraud like that.
