I've always interpreted it as a case of .... hell I'm not gonna try to spell *that* word... anyway, I always thought of it as a sound of positive exclaimation. "w00t, I got an A on that final". Using the double-zero is just leet-ification of the word/sound, where Oh's are replaces with zeros. Basically to leet-ify a word you replace various sound and visual effects of letters/words/syllables with something that looks or sounds similar. 'o' becomes 0, 'e' becomes 3, 'a' becomes 4, 'h' becomes #, 't' becomes 7, the 'cks' sound becomes the letters 'x0rz', etc So for example: "woot, that game rocks" becomes "w00t, 7#47 g4m3 r0x0rz" or something like that. Or something like that ;) James "It is self repeating, of unknown pattern" Data - Star Trek: The Next Generation

Blackadder: Baldrick, have you no idea what irony is?
Baldrick: Yeah, it's like goldy and bronzy only it's made of iron.
