Ikea, why do it
-
SO we just need some plain white storage unit, pretty tall, 2.4 meters, with shelves, door etc, just to stick stuff in in the utility kitchen. So its off to Ikea. 117 euros later, get it up, and there are two fissures on one of the side panels. I could have got the tools out, got some pine planking, and done it myself in probably 2 hours. Now I have to drive back to the sodding Ikea store and change this piece, which will take two hours anyway, I wish I had! And it would have cost 60 euros! I am fed up with Ikea. They only do two things well. That chair from way back that is dead comfy for the back, and their food. Everything else is plain and dull, and while it was well made, at least functional. These days it is all made of cheap garbage and is just crap. The fabrics are crap, the venetian blinds are crap, everything. Its all just cheap ugly junk. Why oh why do I keep going back. I am sure I will be lured into the Ikea trap again though.

It is my understanding that Ikea, used to produce quality products. However, like many companies these days, they execute their mission statement on the cheap. I have even noticed restaurants in my area have started serving their traditional favorites, with substandard ingredients.

I had the impression that years ago, as in decades, their stiff was just ugly, but well made. These days its got a flimsy crap feel to it. DO you think its always been junk?

Short answer, yes. They have always cut the corners, but have become "better" at it every year. The trick is to know what you can get away with. And they're good at that. If you only use a bookshelf to store books in, their junk is good enough.

No and I don't think all of their goods are now. I have a modular storage unit in the living room that's been in use for the better part of 20 years. Their springy slatted bed structures are great; they have adjustable tension so that you can vary the support for different parts of the body; we use those on our pine sleigh bed (not bought form Ikea! :)). Finally, their recessed hinges; functionally great and way, way cheaper than Home Depot. I think the trick is to be selective in what you buy. Cheap particle board furniture will always be garbage! ... and the cinnamon buns!

Not everything is bad at Ikea, most low end is, erm, low end, but the higher end stuff is quite good; the kitchen (akurum) and bedroom (pax) systems are nice and well made but can get expensive fast as you add modules. BUT Once they are properly assembled and installed; it is impossible to move them. I've owned a lot of Ikea stuff over the years and except for a few low end shelves, all them worked as expected.
I'd rather be phishing!

I only go there for the food and the junker area, where they sell off remnants and odd bits -- I've picked up no end of small parts that were useful for something else, particularly in the "lucky dip" bins for screws/brackets/drawer glides/hinges/etc. Other than that, all I've bought there has been kitchen hardware, a couple of their solid oak worktops (which are unbelievably cheap), and a mattress. No furniture at all, because it's all cr@p.

Lets see, kitchen junk, cutlery, plates and basic pots etc, quality, who gives a damn it's kitchen junk!. Office chairs, nice high back and comfortable, 30% cheaper than the local office supply mob. Book cases, yeah these were crap. We then spent $20k on teak furnishings, targeted purchasing thats what you need!
Never underestimate the power of human stupidity RAH

I'd say the part "that's what she said jokes" should be replaced with "going back to shop to get broken/missing bits replaced" then :-\
