Neither. Rubbish. Buy something which has some actually benefit. The kid and I started playing the Lego Lego Movie game.

Depends on your point of view. For a child, they are rubbish and irresponsible but for an adult, they can be great fun.

SR IV gets very silly very quickly GTA V is a bit better than IV but still rather dull

My son and I play Minecraft and he is showing interest in SIMs games. I don't let him play overtly violent video games. I on the other hand, enjoy playing violent combat games with people all over the world. It is fun, and it relaxes me, interestingly enough.

Depending how old is your kid you probably did the right thing however it doesn't make GTA 5 a bad game - it makes it a game just not for you. Going that way Minecraft is a game with a lot of pointless violence (you killed that cute pigs that looked at you just before? Many times?). Not to mention pointless building for countless hours some virtual non-existing structures that can be destroyed in seconds :) Every game is enjoyment bought for money. It is just different amount for that enjoyment for different people. And while I strongly encourage to monitor what your kid plays you could at least watch some youtube of GTA 5 to save your kid disappointment later when you took the game away.

Which should I buy?
Saints Row IV is great fun, with all the super-powers and such. Personally I enjoyed Saints Row: The Third more. Haven't had a chance to go back and play Saints Row 2 yet. My suggestion would actually be to play Saints Row: The Third first, then play Saints Row IV. There's heavy continuity between the two games, and you won't really get some of the jokes in IV unless you've played The Third. Haven't played GTA 5 yet, since I'm waiting on the PC release. It looks good, and I'm looking forward to playing it, but TBH, I really enjoyed the silliness of the Saints Row games. They're a refreshing change from the realism that the GTA games attempt (and do a decent job of achieving.) Bottom line is they aren't even really in the same ballpark. Sure, they're both 3rd person open-world crime simulators, but their spirits are so far removed it's foolish to try comparing them. If you enjoy silly games, go Saints Row. If you prefer realism, go GTA. I say play both. :-D

I agree. Rooster Teeth has done a large number of videos called 'Things to Do in:' which is basically them just monkeying around in games doing random challenges and such after they've tired of the main game. Nerd Cubed and In The Little Wood also have a number of collab challenge videos in the same vein. The vast number of these videos showcase things you can do in the sandbox of a game that aren't violent in nature at all (crazy races, flying challenges, rooftop stunt-jumps, etc.) Though, being adults, they do tend to degrade to pointless violence once they tire of challenges. Still, they're full of ideas one could use to have fun with their children, without requiring the violence. Dismissing a fantastic sandbox like this simply because the core game is violent is foolish in my eyes.
