Very cool. Once while flying over some part of the US southwest, the aircraft had to circle around a supercell/thunderstorm. It was at night. Each time there was lightening inside the cloud the whole mushroom would light up. Was amazing. Wish I had a cool camera and the skill to take good pictures... :-)

Initially the strike starts from the cloud and works it's way down in in a series of straight sections that branch out. The current continues down in stages until streamers from the ground rise to meet one of the branches. When this happens the current travels back up the ionized path created by the downward moving branches. The flickering is caused by repeated current surges up the path. If there's a strong wind this ionised path can move with the wind so in long exposure (1/4 - 1/2 second) pictures of lightning you can see a kind of ribbon effect as multiple current surges occur slightly to the side of previous surges. Another option is that the conductive channel caused by one stroke dissapates before another discharge so a new path is formed between cloud and land. This gives that 'walking' effect. cheers, Chris Maunder
