Microsoft service packs

Thanks so much Microsoft - I really appreciate the way the latest service pack kills our web servers. No - really. I've been told time and time again to hold off applying patches till they are test - but who does the tests? Is there a definitive place on the web where someone gives a patch a thumbs up? Last time I checked that place was Microsoft.com. How does one balance the need to protect servers against script kiddies who have nothing better to do than attack the latest security vulnerability before they are patched with the need to ensure server stability and uptime? I've always erred on the side of trusting Microsoft but I guess that's just being naive. cheers, Chris Maunder

One thing I have learnt over the years in software is never be the first to try anything. I would never apply a Microsoft service pack in a corporate environment until I tested it fully, even then I would rather not install one, unless I really had to, taking down the companies PC network does not go down very well! Speaking from experience, fortunately, I have only ever destroyed the odd PC! You have my commiserations, from one who has been bitten!

Which SP has bitten you now? I have been waffling over installing Win2K SP3 for some time. My mouse creeps slowly toward the icon, then I have to forcibly drag it back into the safe zone, over and over and over again.... It scares usssss! Evil, wicked Service Pack, musn't touch! I think MS must be testing their SPs on Linux servers. My latest - just this morning OE started crashing when attempting to reply to an email. Six times, msimn.exe:SysFader tried to read memory that could not be read, and the repair option doen't fix it. Naturally, the Knowledge Base contains no mention of it. Knoppix is looking soooooo good right now. It is ok for women not to like sports, so long as they nod in the right places and bring beers at the right times.

I have been doing usability studies for MS, I signed a confidentiality agreement so ,all I can say is this area they are aware of and are working on it and should improve :) Later,

My Outlook has been crashing incessently as well since last week's patching (the same that caused so much trouble with our servers). But at least Microsoft is taking security seriously.
