"Basic goods" don't have to be supplied 24/7: until the end of last century it was very normal for all shops in the UK to be shut all day Sunday, half day on Wednesday, and only small "corner" shops would be open past 18:00. It just takes a little organisation on teh shopper's part. More important than "basic goods" are services: hospitals, old folks homes, police, fire, ambulance. Emerganecy cover is also needed for some phones, water supplies, electricity, and gas. Even the military must operate 24/7 or countries would be invaded at 18:00 on Friday, and wouldn't be able to respond until Monday morning!

Bad command or file name. Bad, bad command! Sit! Stay! Staaaay...

Yeah you got me wrong on that. I meant not the retailers, but the ones transporting it. And also i said that services need to operate 24/7 where i also implied hospital, water, energy and all of that. I mean, shops have closed on sundays everywhere i was, so that's just normal, but food transports are allowed and have to drive on sundays :)

Possibly but then we'd have to cook for ourselves instead so how's that a holiday for us? And why stop at McDonalds and KFC? Why should their workers get the privilege but not Wendy's or Taco Bell or Pizza Hut? Or, come to that, nurses, police, fire services, coastguards, the navy, TV and radio, baseball players .... well, you get the idea!

Why not may 12th? Or better still, August 27th? Or, if we're really into making people celebrate other peoples idea of a holiday, why not close everything for your birthday? Or, presuming your view stems from a political view of "May Day", consider the following:* Marx, Engles, etc. were brilliant.

          • The experiment was tried
          • It failed
          • Time for everyone to get over it

My birthday IS a national holiday in the country I was born in :-)
