Car related rant - #5

Transmission goes out $3K. Car value $3K. Well it is in (I thought) good condition, so put the new transmission in. Two weeks later the check engine light comes on and it starts to surge at around 40 MPH. So I am told it will be $3K to fix. Elephant, elephant, elephant! Not going to fix it, but still have at least a year to pay on my pickup truck. So drive the truck and only drive the car when I have to. :(( I really do not like to drive the truck in town as my spatial perception is not the best. Hope to get something early next year, but in the mean time...

See, that's the real problem with modern cars. You need a computer technician to diagnose the problem, and special tools and knowledge to make repairs. I predict that we've seen the end of the "classic car" because after 5-10 years they stop making repair parts available, the most important of which are the myriad of computers that control the car. I'm seeing it happen with Mustangs made in the 80's. The computers are starting to fail, and if you can find one, they're expensive as hell. I am of the opinion that the manufacturers are doing this intentionally to get you to have to buy a new car every 5-10 years.

No facts to back this up, but it seems the cars are made cheaply (bad ignition switches, bad emissions) so they can sell you a new car in a few years.

Better than the horse it replaced: In 1894, the Times of London estimated that by 1950 every street in the city would be buried nine feet deep in horse manure. One New York prognosticator of the 1890s concluded that by 1930 the horse droppings would rise to Manhattan’s third-story windows. http://www.historic-uk.com/HistoryUK/HistoryofBritain/Great-Horse-Manure-Crisis-of-1894/[^]

Yep, some sort of planned obsolescence. Not just force us (well, not me, as I don't have a car), to buy a new car, but for all the support line to buy new diagnostic tools for each car manufacturers and car models.
I'd rather be phishing!

That's because the manufacturer knew that if it was much more complex than that, the French would just give up trying to fix it.

Fiat ECU Scan (hacked version) off the net and a $10 cable to diagnose my alfa. And US/Jap cars diagnostic SW is freely available I have heard.
