Slackware 9 is DA BOMB
-
Hi all Just finished downloading Slackware 9. Only 1 650mb CD. All the dev apps you need with none of the crap ussually included with other distros. Install was a bit problematic with scsi, but work flawlessly 2nd try. It even sports the new xfree 4.3 and kde 3.1 (im using what they call the redmond theme, heck i cant even notice the difference now ;P ). I would recommend this to anyone! No wonder those *nix ppl always swore by slackware. This is the easiest link I have found. http://media.punkmac.com/slackware-9.0-iso/slackware-9.0-install.iso[^] I rated this article 2 by mistake. It deserves more. I wanted to get to the second page... - vjedlicka 3:33 25 Nov '02

leppie wrote: No wonder those *nix ppl always swore by slackware. The UNIX people like{d,s} Slackware. It's the Linux people who always swore at slackware. :-D Slackware has a lot of tweaking potential, which can be rewarding if you know what you're doing. At least, that's how it used to be. Haven't touched it in ages now. Why did you download the entire ISO? I thought Slackware supported FTP-based installs? If you get very acquainted with Slackware, you should try a BSD derivative as well. Slackware was modelled after the BSD os's, and was quite popular with former/playsick BSD users. Maybe that's changed now though. FreeBSD is the tweaking operating system of choice. There are so many parameters you can tweak for both fun, profit and disaster. Makes life quite interesting.. :-D -- Shine, enlighten me - shine Shine, awaken me - shine Shine for all your suffering - shine

Well, I haven't got Slackware 9 yet (getting ADSL in a month :yippee-emoticon: ), but I have Slack8.1, and I think it rulez. Was a bit cranky to install though, but for the rest I like it... Unfortunately it doesn't have ntfsresize built into the setup though, but that's not impossible to do by yourself - just the hassle factor. Paul ;)

Hehe, we're stealing your weather now. Spring is so close now. Woohoo! I promise I'll give it back in 6 months. ;) leppie wrote: I'm meant to be studying though, but just cant get into studying after 6 years of working... Any tips? I was only away from studies for a year, so I didn't have much problem being assimilated by the system again. The only thing I can recommend is to put all the work away, don't even give it a thought if that's possible. If you're working in parallel with your studies, I imagine that can be quite hard. Have you considered working at the university while studying? I did my masters as an assistant professor. I was even lucky enough to get a full salary! The problems is I'm not remotely interested in Economics and all that jazz, and the CS and math (to a degree) is not that hard. My stats for the last 24 hours. 1.1gb up, 1.1gb down running a poor dual ISDN connection flat. Quick math tells me I'll have ADSL for only 36 hours before I get capped LOL. I just installed on VMWare for the time being as I dont have another PC. But it runs rather well. X is a bit slow though. That's the way to go. They'll grow, or shrink, as persons depending on how you look at it. Either way, it's good for them. To become good at something, one has to work for it.
