VS 2015 had a number of updates so I allowed it to start. Now if I try to open VS 2013, it says "Cannot run when update is in progress". I didn't know that I can't open VS 2013 while VS 2015 is updating. Haven't done much work in the last 40 minutes or so  , and I'll be careful in the future not to let any VS update to run unless I'm just about to go home. Update: Lies, F&*&#^*G lies. When the update started, it told me I needed to close VS in order to avoid a computer restart at the end. Now the update is done, and it wants to restart.

The reason is that the executable has the same name for every version of VS - devenv.exe... The update process blocks that...

Seriously, it's your work tool, right? Nothing wrong with updating that on your work time rather than your spare time...

Indeed, which is why I allowed the update to run. But had I known it would block me out for 40 minutes, I'd much rather do it as the last thing at work so that I could start the update and go home.

And then come in tomorrow to find it did 2% and now wants you to click "OK" three times?

Yes, but what's annoying is when work time suddenly becomes spare time, and you're at work! Marc

I just keep 2015 up-to-date and use that for everything. But, isn't Notepad++ still available?

Yes, it's what kept me afloat until I needed to build.
