Hey all, Has anyone here been to / lived in the San Francisco bay area in the US? Got any tips for places to visit/things to do? Long story short - I'm going to be spending the middle of November on a fully-funded tour through Silicon Valley, learning from accomplished entrepreneurs, meeting startups, and visiting the likes of Google, Facebook, Dropbox, and Amazon. The tour is run by an Australian group called Startup Catalyst[^], which takes 20 Australian youth on this trip each year after a highly competitive selection process. So yeah - I'm keen to make the most of my brief visit  :bob: :jig: Any contacts I should make or places I should visit? BTW, it's been a while since I posted in the Lounge - how's everyone going? :java:

The WWII sub parked up on pier somethingorother is worth a visit. Go north on 1 to the Pelican Inn, near Stinsons beach, its a nice little resto-bar. The aquarium is good, on pier somethingelse. The seals smell. Haight Ashbury is a joke. The gays are funny. The trams ridiculously long to queue for, dont bother. Lombard street is too, approach it from an angle, not direct. Nappa is worth a visit if you like wine. Thats about it, didnt spend too long there really.

Fisherman's Wharf and China Town are both great places to eat and shop. Definitely "try" to drive down Lombard Street. Plan a night tour of Alcatraz island. Obviously visit Golden Gate Bridge and take a ride on the cable cars. One thing to keep in mind - San Francisco is northern California (ie. not San Diego or Hollywood). It can get pretty damn cold. Have fun!

Try some authentic sourdough bread; it isn't something I enjoy, but my wife does.

I completely agree with the night visit to Alcatraz. Very good talks that don't happen during the day.

When you leave, try the chilli dogs at the airport. Best I ever had.
