Before SARS, i wouldn't think much when going out but now i would really think twice.:~ Even if i go out, it isn't the same as before. A few years ago SARS mutated from a fumbling, corrupt and incompetent organisation into a leaner and more lethal strain. Now nobody is safe, not even the very rich. People have been put in jail because of SARS. Consultants have offered me ways of getting around SARS, but I have refused, counting myself as a good South African and not one to cheat the system. I will pay my due and live with it. In fact without SARS, South Africa would crumble. Yes, the South African Revenue Service is indeed a bitch. My apologies. Was not meant to offend. Just that South Africa has been chuckling quitely to itself everytime the newspaper or TV runs a headline like "SARS wreaks havoc in Hong Kong." or "Londoners hide from SARS." As for the virus, there was a scare here a few days ago but other doctors have labelled it as paranoia. I hope HK can beat it and it does not spread further.

About I week ago, when I first started googling for some info about SARS, I got a giggle about the South African Revenue Service. It has travelled here to Canada, specifically here in Toronto. There are also reported cases in the US, but not to the same degree. Most hospitals have now stopped all visitations and it appears that the primary transmission occurs at care giver facilities. My wife provides home care services and currently she is no longer seeing anyone new who has just been discharged from a hospital. :(( Chris Meech "what makes CP different is the people and sense of community, things people will only discover if they join up and join in." Yet again an example of the media making something small into a sensational issue and instilling panic in people. A little perspective please. For example, in the US alone, there are 400,000 smoking related deaths a year. Source: http://www.streetlaw.org/youthact/tobacco/responsible.html[^] Where's the media sensationalism? Where's the public panic? How many millions of Chinese die each year from smoking related deaths? Marc Help! I'm an AI running around in someone's f*cked up universe simulator.

I know of at least 3 cases just off the top of my head. At least one case here in Atlanta. Tim Smith I'm going to patent thought. I have yet to see any prior art.

As Chris pointed out, the rate and ease of transmission (similar to the ease of transmission of a common cold) and the 3.5% death rate is what is concerning everyone. SARS is very much in a "growth" phase. If SARS spread to everyone in China, we'd be looking at 45 million deaths. ------------------------------------------ "What happened in that Rhode Island club is shocking. The mortaility rate is about 4% - not very high for flu given that we are dealing with people with preexisting health problems or the elderly. The transmisibility is very low - basically you need to be sneezed upon to catch it. It doesn't travel through air conditioning or by touch. More people died in HK by commiting suicide last week than died of SARS. I wouldn't really call that "very low". AIDS might be considered "very low" since you have to have sex with someone, but sneezing on someone? One website said this ( http://asia.news.yahoo.com/030401/3/uzuq.html[^] ): WHO and Hong Kong experts say the virus spreads through droplets by sneezing or coughing and such direct infection can usually occur within a radius of about three feet (one metre). The virus can also spread indirectly as it can survive outside of the human body for three to six hours. Contact with any object that is tainted by droplets containing the virus, for example, a contaminated phone, could lead to infection if a person then touches their eyes, nose or mouth. Health experts have not ruled out that it could be airborne, which dramatically raises the contagious nature of the virus and would make it far harder to contain. Also, it's not just the old and sick who are dying from SARS. Italy buries doctor who identified the SARS virus[^] Merrion wrote: More people died in HK by commiting suicide last week than died of SARS. But SARS is in a "growth phase". Or are you saying we should ignore the problem until SARS causes a significant number of deaths? (Note: some people said the same things about AIDS over a decade ago - i.e. "(fill in the blank) causes more death than AIDS, so why is everyone worried about it?") ------------------------------------------ "What happened in that Rhode Island club is shocking.
