Journal of the American Medical Association:
"Numerous foundations, industries, professional societies, and governmental agencies have provided hundreds of millions of dollars in funding to support basic science research in obesity, clinical trials and observational studies, development of new drugs and devices, and hospital and community programs to help stem the tide of the obesity epidemic," "The obesity epidemic in the United States is now 3 decades old, and huge investments have been made in research, clinical care, and development of various programs to counteract obesity. However, few data suggest the epidemic is diminishing,"

Something I found recently was suggesting that the US obesity problem may be related to their habit of drinking ice-cold water rather than cooler-then-room-temperature water: Hot or not? How serving temperature affects the way food tastes[^] Because cold inhibits the "sweet" taste receptor TRPM5 it may be that the US needs it's food a lot sweeter than Europe because that balances the reduced sense of taste. I doubt it's the whole answer, but it's certainly an idea.

Hmm. Their beer has to be served ice cold. Are receptors other than "sweet, bitter and umami" also inhibited? Is there a 'Bleh!' receptor? :-D

Interesting. So all the British need to do is: 1. Convince the USians to switch from cold water to hot tea 2. Revive the Tea Act of 1773 3. Profit

Those don't count as "beer". Heavily diluted moose urine, possibly. ;)

It tastes even worse (if possible) at room temperature. X|

As I discovered in my youthful innocence. :) (So long ago, and yet I still remember that first fine careless 'Gotcha!'.)

They may be better off not tasting anything... X| When I think of American "cuisine" I think of McDonalds, KFC and Burger King. I may be a little biased :)

Actually the cause you may be right but the reason is not what I have heard. Have you ever tried washing greasy pans and dishes with cold water? It doesn't work to well and makes things much worse. Many foods (especially typical American Cuisines) are greasy and if they travel through the pathways with ice cold water (or cold milk, soda, or anything cold for that matter) it causes the grease to harden quicker giving rise to general digestion problems.
Computers have been intelligent for a long time now. It just so happens that the program writers are about as effective as a room full of monkeys trying to crank out a copy of Hamlet. The interesting thing about software is it can not reproduce, until it can.

Nope! Pretty sure we just eat more and exercise less. No mystery or conspiracy.
There are two kinds of people in the world: those who can extrapolate from incomplete data. There are only 10 types of people in the world, those who understand binary and those who don't.

It also is responsible for our proclivity for poisoning pigeons in the park.

The issue isn't with medical science per se, we didn't and don't need all these studies to tell us what wrong. It's the diet stupid! And it's the marketing of said diet. A massive campaign opposing that marketing is what is needed. Coupled with a massive campaign to change peoples eating habits.

Er, knowing the concern over obesity in the USA, and seeking to amuse, I selected some suitable text and posted it under America - Fast. I don't see the need for massive campaigns, as folks do what they want anyway. Most tubby folk I know are well aware of the need to curb their tubbiness, and how to do so. They just don't.

True. But they didn't start out that way, they were kids being marketed to or poorly edumacatered. So, yeah, massive campaign. But maybe it's a waste.

So where were the parents, why are ineffective teachers being employed? No use having a massive campaign that is not effectively backed up by Family and School.
