I do still work on some desktop apps but more and more they are a pain to deploy and they should really just be implemented as web apps or at least WPF / UWP or something.

Good question... of they code I've written in the past 10 years, most of it has been back-end processing (Windows services) or console applications that can be scheduled and executed. When I have to write 'interactive' code, it is usually VBA Macros in Excel that existed before I arrived.. we just maintain the beast.

The stuff I do is predominately automation systems and supporting apps so, while they can run on my desktop and laptop boxes, that is not where they are deployed. They end up in one factory or another in one country or another. FWIW, at my previous employer most of our customers were suppliers to Apple, Samsung, and their competitors so things we made can be found in the vast majority of the world's mobile devices. My current employer is in a completely different line of business. I have finally escaped from the semiconductor industry and I am very glad for that.

I have been for the past year. Before that, I wrote software for the Microsoft Hololens and back-end services for the military.

When you are dead, you won't even know that you are dead. It's a pain only felt by others. Same thing when you are stupid.

Ridiculous. I've been doing desktop dev for 30+ years and will continue to so. There is no shortage of work out there.

This questions comes up all the time. Right now I'm working on a WPF app for a medical device. Before that I did a WPF app for automotive diagnostics. Before that a WPF app for the chiropractic industry. Before that a WPF for the construction industry, before that.... ... and on and on and on... For 30+ years I've been doing desktop apps. There still are and always will be desktop apps. Some apps have no reason to be and never will be web apps.

If it's not broken, fix it until it is. Everything makes sense in someone's mind. Ya can't fix stupid.

Our legacy systems more than a couple years old are predominantly desktop, and they still need maintaining.
