On my way home Sunday from Austin Cars & Coffee, I stopped at Bucee's for gas, and a lady in a Prius sneered at my car, and then called me a terrorist. I had no response ready (I blame global warming), so I asked her if I could see her tits. I didn't get to see them.

It's Austin - imported liberal insanity.

One of the mechanisms that most EV folks talk about are universal batteries/battery swapping. i.e. you don't pull into a station to recharge, you pull into a station to swap battery packs, and the recharging happens elsewhere. Now, whether or not that becomes a reality in 20 years is another story.

That would require every vehicle to use an identical battery pack. (Phyiscal size, voltage, peak discharge rate, cooling, etc). I'll let you decide how likely a result that is. On paper flow batteries could fit the bill by letting you refill your cars battery similar to how you refill your gas tank; but the energy density of the liquid eltrolytes they use is several times lower than that of LiON batteries.

Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful? --Zachris Topelius Training a telescope on one’s own belly button will only reveal lint. In a conversation yesterday, someone said in 20 years, fossil fuels vehicles will be obsolete and we will all be driving electric vehicles. So.. let's look at that. Most transformers are designed to provide power to up to 4 hours; if each house has an electric vehicle, the transformer is not designed to provide that much power... it is designed for current residential use. So... who doesn't get a full charge? Also, transformers in operation are designed to cool down overnight... during the lower use period. If you are charging your vehicle at night, then the transformers doesn't cool down which reduces its life span. The utility company can replace the transformers, but that will increase your monthly bill because they have to recoup the costs. There is an established fuel delivery system for gasoline and diesel. Who is going to put in all of the charging stations along the interstate highways and maintain them? What if you pull in to recharge and all units are busy? Are you willing to wait a few hours? Food for thought...

Obsolete, eh? Try getting a 747 off the ground with batteries!

Given the beast you drive, it's not surprising, I suppose, that some are downright terrified. I'd say, mission accomplished.

There is also the concept of photo cells on the vehicle itself. This would only charge during the daytime of course and would be a very slow charge rate. Perfect strategy for a commuter car, poor choice for a transport vehicle.

While Texas is a right leaning state (ie. Republican), the capitol city of Austin is very left (ie. Democrat) with plenty of limousine liberal tree hugging politically correct environmental crazies.
