OK, that may be the case. But in this specific instance, with a guy wearing a shirt covered in swastikas, I don't think it's unreasonable to call him a Nazi.

    I agree.

Now you are just being silly ;P The point I am making is that there is a spectrum of political views and that there has been something of a movement in the media to brand anyone who is not a socialist as very far right wing. This is a complete mischaracterisation of the complexities of political views, is divisive and limits debate because as soon as someone expresses a view that is not in conformity with socialism they are branded as a fascist.

No I haven't seen that. The main stream media reports on what there is to report. There are liberal and conservative media outlets that both attempt to brand the other side as extremists. Certainly the conservative sources I have seen are, at a minimum, keeping up with those tactics.

A sucker punch is surprise attack on someone who's not expecting, did anything to expect or was convinced he has not to expect an attack.

OK, so it is just an unprovoked attack?

A bit more: it's a surprise and deceitful attack. Like gaining trust or approaching without posing any threat and then hitting full force. Backstabbing, that's the word I was struggling to find. A sucker punch is very similar to a backstab.

OK. I kind of get you. Not a term we use in the UK. Like Sasparilla. What the fuck is that? It took me about 20 years to work out 'grits' are just semolina. There are so many US terms that seem like we should know them, and probably did, in the 16th century, but time has obscured the memory.

Amen. The only cases in which an individual may be justified in initiating violence are in self-defence or in defence of another. This was neither.

If you have an important point to make, don't try to be subtle or clever. Use a pile driver. Hit the point once. Then come back and hit it again. Then hit it a third time - a tremendous whack. --Winston Churchill

Actually, this is central to the ANTFA philosophy. I've encountered some of their doctrine, and they operate on the premise that all ideas and concepts that they do not agree with are, in fact, physical assaults and need to be responded to in kind. The kernel of the modern movement is that hurt feelings are a literal assault.

Only in la-la land. In law, there is a very big difference between offensive words and physical assault. Hitting someone because "he said nasty things about my mother" is a childish reaction at best. If the authorities in the US do not act to rein in these over-grown children, we may as well bid farewell to what might be the last, best, hope of civilization on this planet. (The Europeans are already committing suicide by immigration, and I don't see any other nations that are overly concerned with human rights)

This is the core philosophy of ANTFA, a group that has implicit approval from the left. I don't understand how a party that preaches tolerance and human rights as its central platform would condone violence against those that have a different opinion, but I suppose intellectual consistency is too much to hope for from partisans.

The core division is not between "right" and "left", or "fascist" and "progressive", but between collectivists and non-collectivists. By this measure, both ANTIFA and their opponents are equally bad. One of the greatest coups of the left was rebranding themselves as the "good guys", as opposed to the bad guys on the right. Any serious student of history would know that Stalin's and Mao's murderous head counts almost make Hitler's seem small. For all its faults, the only system that has given people both political freedom and riches is capitalism. For all its faults, the US Constitution was a noble attempt to codify this in law. It is heart-breaking to see the citizens of the US throw away this wonderful framework for short-term partisan gain.

That's exceptionally well put. Thank you.
