Issue/Defect tracking

Howdy folks. I'm doing some research into issue/defect tracking tools for development. Has anyone done any research in this and have any recomendations of a decent, fairly low cost tool/package? I'd prefer to host it internally on my own systems, but I'm also looking at hosted. Unfortunately I can't really use sourceforge since the software is internal and not able to be opensourced. I'll also second that. At my last company StarTeam was our first choice with this as our backup. Instead the company got rid of everyone.

FogBugz is webbased, fairly good, and has an 14-days online-demo. http://www.fogcreek.com/FogBUGZ/[^] (We're not using it, though...)

We use TestTrack Pro. It works fairly well, my biggest complaint would be the limitations of plain-text data entry in some situations, but this doesn't bother me too much. The best recomendation i can give is that i don't mind using it, which in the end is what really matters. FogBugz looks cool though, wish i'd tried it...

check Issue Manager[^]. it is a free, ASP-based defect tracking solution, useful for smaller teams.

At Timex, we use Merant's PVCS Tracker. It works with a number of different databases (we use it with SQL Server), and has a web client so users can access it from outside of your firewall. There is also a nice application that in house users can work with. Queries created on one app will work with the other, etc. The only downside is that we haven't found a way to print all SCR's/ECR's from the web client. Hope that helps... We use PVCS Tracker too with good success. But it ain't terribly cheap. If you want one that does an excellent job and is free, check out www.WinCVS.org ~Steve

Uh, sorry, wasn't thinking straight. CVS is Version Control, not defect tracking. I know that BugZilla is a fairly versital and free Defect tracking system... but I've never used it. ~Steve
