That's it, I finally admitted I am fat. There isn't any point pretending, I am gross. So, time to do something about it: Diet, basically zero carbs/low GI. Rye bread for example has a Glycemic Index of 45, not much more than broccoli, so that is an OK carb. Also taking apple cider vinegar, 2 teaspoons before a meal, and at night. Unpasteurised. Apparently it has good bacteria in it. Started a few days ago and losing half a kilo a day: 121.3 121 120.5 120 119.5 It works. Really. My target is 100 kgs, I weighed that when I was ~30. I cold hit this by the end of March at this rate! Ideal, want to go skiing, and NOT lugging 20kgs around is going to make me ski great! :) One note, I was very tired for two days on zero carbs, so I had a rye bread cheese fondue. About 1000 calories in total. Feel much better. And I am allowing myself red wine, say three glasses or so a night.

Surely, croissants contain nothing but ok carbs as well - not to mention pains au chocolat???

Note that losing weight too quickly is (a) dangerous to your health, and (b) may lead to yo-yo dieting, because you don't actually change your life-style in the long term. IIRC, Weight Watchers recommend losing about 0.5 kg a week on a balanced diet. Note that this is for people who weigh 60-90 kg. I'M not sure what their advice would be for those who weigh 120 kg.

If you have an important point to make, don't try to be subtle or clever. Use a pile driver. Hit the point once. Then come back and hit it again. Then hit it a third time - a tremendous whack. --Winston Churchill

Yeah, you have to do both: eat less and exercise. And make that change your lifestyle - or it'll go back on when you stop ...

I've manage to lose quite a bit, about 1.4 kg/week by walking fast (about 6 km/h) for 5 kms a day (basically walking from the train station to work each morning and each evening), eating mostly vegetables for lunch and fish or white meat with abundant vegetables at dinner. Carbs are ok but no more than 2/3 times per week. The amount lost each week decreased with time since I had less luggage to drag around for each movement but I managed to lose 17 kg in 6 months. Over the following years I managed to get them all back, first slowly and then always faster, due to back problems that kept me from exercising regularly and my usual gluttony that avalanched more and more. Now I'm on diet again + gym and I'm starting to lose weight again. I'm just sharing my experience, maybe it will help you... BTW I don't drink except on very special occasions. Good luck with you diet!

Bad advice. He wants to do zero carbohydrates. You just told him to go racing with an empty fuel tank. It's not so bad when a car runs out of fuel, but it's not so easy to restart him when he collapses.

Oh, he can eat a two pound steak. As often as he wants to. It's all protein, fat and water, but zero carbohydrates. No carbohydrates means no fuel, so the body must fall back on the reserves and the bacon belt melts. The problem is, that these reserves can't be accessed so easily and too much physical activity might lead to him collapsing and not getting up again. I would not try this without medical supervision and certainly not go merrily running around in lonly places.

Not to say exercise isn't important but... One minute physics[^] I just like quoting the choc bar vs exercise example. People, especially in the new year, tend to do it all from the start and fail. Start small and start with your diet. I've changed my diet this year and any day now, I'll be getting the cross trainer downstairs to take it to the next level. Yep, any day now :~

In the long run (pun intended), yes, but some quick results may help you to get started.

I got on very well with WeightWatchers - online only. I started because my partner did it, and just by eating the meals she was, still raiding the snack machine at work, still drinking like a fish at weekends, even I lost half a stone. There are some cracking recipes on the site - we have about a seven week rotation of meals that we still eat even when not on the diet (Potato, Pea & Paneer Balti is a special favourite)

I intend to make this a long term thing. It is easy to stick to, and you are not hungry. Meat, veg, nice sauces, and even as I said a cheese fondue, there is nothing NOT to like about that lot! Because of the amount of physical work I dont on the house, I am currently rebuilding a wall knocked over by a car, I got some work out drink, high energy and nutrients, no sugar. I am going to try that when I get tired, it might kick the body into fat burning mode. Look, body builders trim down before events, and work out while doing so to get their fat down to really low levels, so they must know some tricks. :)

Start running, if you don't do it yet.

Tried that, I am too heavy. Started getting sore ankles. Cycling is better, though at the moment I am doing quite a lot of physical work.
