Reverse gears(MT) in cars

Does it work like a piece of cake in your car? Reverse gear was a pain in my last car. (Manual transmission) Just in few days of use, I noticed the reverse gear shift doesn't engage in one attempt. I'd have to disengage, move the car by few inches and then try again then, it works. When I raised this issue with the dealer, he said, shifting reverse gears need some "knack" :| and this is how it is! After years of usage, at one point, it became so worse. Then I called to the service department and explained the problem. Well, they came to the point straight. It would need some minor replacement and it might cost $400. What the heck, I've been complaining this right from day one on a brand new car. & I had a different response. I just totally dislike this pattern Something looks like a problem for you from day one & the other party never recognizes it & when the problem gets severe, they suggest a solution straight without looking at the history of this complaints & responses. :doh: Okay, I took it easy, I did not go for the $400 replacement, I tweaked up my "knack" for reverse-gear shifts and ensured I live with it Long enough till I sold it back to the same manufacturer. Yup they do exchange customers old cars for new ones. Now, I have a brand new car. Got it after exchanging my old one. It's different model but from the same manufacturer. It's just few weeks old. - Push the clutch pedal completely; 2) Some cars are terrible. My old Fiat Seicento required also to move the car by a few inches in order to engage the rear shift. I found it hasppens mostly on the cars that have the rear gear at the bottom right of the clutch lever, while the ones that have it on the upper left + button/lever are more reliable. 3) Another model form the same manifacturer => possibly the same gearbox manifacturer.

It's a common problem in manual transmissions. That are worn out. From the '60s.

The OP's car is a new car with an automatic. Info: Newer cars (since the early 80's?) with manual transmissions have a reverse lockout switch that prevents the car from being shifted into reverse unless the driver has his foot on the brake. They also have a clutch relay that doesn't allow the ignition to be turned on unless the clutch pedal is fully depressed. Some newer cars won't allow the ignition to be turned on unless the brake pedal is being pressed. My F150 won't allow the shifter to be moved unless the brake pedal is being pressed.

Never seen that with the cars I've driven... I drive 4 different cars in a normal basis and I've rented a lot of cars... None of them has the problems you depict. In the worst case and only some times, the gear is not getting in at first attempt. Just removing the gear, releasing the clutch and pressing it again to put the gear again works...

A bit obstinate you are, arent' you? :) It works quite well on my current car (worked quite well on my past ones too). Sometimes the handbrake obstacles reverse gear insertion, however releasing it does the trick.

You dont have synchro on reverse gear, so if the gears dont mesh exactly they wont engage. You can give it a hard shove, or lightly lift the clutch to spin the gears a bit. (Synchro gears have a small clutch on them, some variant of slip ring to bring the speed of the gears up to synch.) You can also try synthetic gearbox oil. It is much better than mineral, has a flatter viscosity curve, which means it shifts when cold MUCH easier, and also has a much higher film compression failure point, so reduces wear.

Never had a problem: my Lancia went straight into reverse (which may have been a miracle, it was a Lancia, after all). My current and previous Mercs have never given a problem. Even my Simca went straight into reverse - admittedly half the time I wanted a forward gear, but hey ho ... it was cheap. It might be worth checking the clutch - if it's dragging a bit that can make it difficult to engage gears generally.

The reverse gear idler has "straight" teeth and these won't engage if not aligned - so sometimes you need to put the clutch in and out to turn the driven shaft a bit... See this explanation[^] Note - if you get this wrong on an old Land Rover (as I have done in the past) it will hurt a lot.
