Removing a multi-OS installation
-
I have three OS's installed on my PC. One was installed for playing around with VS7, and the other is a test installation of Whistler. How do I properly remove these extra OS installations. My main OS (the one installed before the other two) is Win2000. Thanks in advance. Jamie Nordmeyer Portland, Oregon, USA

How does one uninstall an OS? Format the drive/partition. :) Then edit your boot.ini file and remove references to the OSes you remove. --Mike-- http://home.inreach.com/mdunn/ The preferred snack of 4 out of 5 Lounge readers.

Hi Michael. Thanks for the quick reply. All three OS's are installed on the same drive and on the same partition. Also, I did a complete search of my hard drive, and I don't have a boot.ini file. Am I SOL? :) Thanks, Mike. Jamie Nordmeyer Portland, Oregon, USA

Ah, in that case you should have one directory for each OS, right? Like C:\WINNT, C:\WHISTLER etc. Delete the directories for the OSes you want to get rid of. BOOT.INI should be in the root of C:. If it's not there, maybe Whistler has a new boot-up process and did away with that file. I've never used Whistler so I can't say for sure. :( --Mike-- http://home.inreach.com/mdunn/ The preferred snack of 4 out of 5 Lounge readers.

Hi (excuse the interruption) How (why?? ) did you get all three OS's on the same partition! Q1> Do you have three separate WINNT system folders? Q2> Do you have a common Program Files folder. If you answer yes to both then you can probably safely remove the WINNT system folders for the relevant OS's. If not....... boot.ini should be in the root folder of your boot partition. If you can't see it turn off the option to hide system/hidden files in explorer options. Mick

:) Hi Mick. Perhaps they are on different partitions. I don't really recall, because I installed them a while ago. I've removed the directories for the other two installs, so I'll see if that worked the next time I boot up. Thanks. Jamie Nordmeyer Portland, Oregon, USA
