I shutter when I say this but am thinking of upgrading to Windows 10 Pro from Windows 7 Pro. I've searched for the last hour and am under the impression that I have to buy a fresh version of Windows 10 Pro as no upgrade exists? Could this be?

Yes, you need to buy the upgrade, and the free upgrade has passed (I believe). I made the switch from Windows 7 to Windows 10 (with new PC), and I am quite happy now with Windows 10. At first, Windows 10 was a nightmare, I have been told, but after a number of Windows 10 updates and patches, I think most of the big bugs have been taken care of. Might I suggest though, that you get a new PC/laptop with your Windows 10, if possible. I don't know how Windows 10 will operate on the old hardware...if it is "that" old. :-\ -- My 2 cents

This implies it should be possible: Windows 10 upgrade paths (Windows 10) | Microsoft Docs[^] but why not just call / email sales at MS? They are normally pretty keen to take money off you ...

Ed Bott on ZDNet says it's still upgradable free: Here's how you can still get a free Windows 10 upgrade | ZDNet[^] Seems the free upgrade is still valid for people using assistive technologies, so if for example you sometimes use the Magnifier you're using an assistive technology and qualify for the free upgrade.

… and my proof of pudding corroboration: With my old Acer I took the free upgrade from 7 Pro to 10 Pro and had no end of trouble. Finally the machine kept crashing to the point where I had to do two complete rebuilds within a week, coupled with multiple processor shut-downs due to overheating when running Hyper-V. Solution - buy a new laptop - a top of the range HP gaming laptop (what the shop had in stock at the time) and the world changed. It is really stable and I have had no problems with it at all for four months. I have yet to try two VMs in Hyper-V, but I suspect it will be no problem.
