My tablet has been charging really slowly for a couple of days - like I used to leave it on standby while I slept and it'd be 100% by the time I wake up: but now I'm lucky if it charges to 50% when it's turned off and charging all day. Tried different chargers, different cables, ... So I ran a toothpick over the micro USB connector and it seems to be charging faster, and I'm guessing it's gunk build up over time. Anyone got a good way to clean it, given the connector is teeny?

I was having the same problem with my phone. I solved it by powering it off, and then I used a thin pin to dig all of the gunk out of the slot. I was amazing at just how much had accumulated in there. It was USB-C, though, so it's a bit bigger than microUSB. Looking in a nearby micro USB port, it looks like a pin or needle would work on one side of the connector block in the middle, but I don't think it would fit between the connector block and the "top" of the port. SIM card ejector tools like these ones might work well. Some of them are more flat than round, so they might actually be able to clean out the whole micro USB port. When you've got it cleaned, you can get dust covers to pop in the port when you're not charging to prevent the buildup from happening again.

What do you do with the magnets? They are tiny and not soooo strong. How about this one[^]?

Difficult to get hold of in the UK these days. And I'm not convinced it will do the PCB the connector is mounted to any good. :-D

It's on sale in most of the South London pubs, but only to fifteen year olds.

Too strong and far too heavy. I would not get off the ground with it. The strongest ones I have here right now are in this motor[^].

CRC makes a decent electrical contact cleaner, Griff. I don't know if it's available in the UK, but it's good stuff. You can also use brake cleaner, but it leaves a bit of residue, and it's kinda harsh on some plastics. You can use a pipe cleaner to get the residue off, but it's a bit difficult to fix a melted plastic connector. Try it on one you don't need...

USB (Physical) - Wikipedia[^] Micro USB (B in this case) is 1.8mm high and half of that is the plastic supports - there is no swab you can get in there and near the pins. I got a new connector!
