Do You Get Along ?

Except there's been more than one, I, too, use the ignore-their-existence method to whatever extent possible. One is a current fellow employee (used to be a friend) that betrayed trust - to perhaps earn a brownie point or two. The other, in the current environment, is a contractor and his cronies - who are singularly uncooperative (and crappy programmers, as well). In their case, actually, I'll occasionally say things to remind them that the in-house developers do it right, know what their up to . . . and will have no trouble tearing up their meal ticket. On the other hand, they do make us look good!

I did have one case of a sub-contractor who was spying on us, as they were a competitor on other USAF contracts. The guy became quite arrogant and indignant one Monday morning when he discovered his system administrator privileges had been revoked, and there were access control lists on everything. I didn't dislike the guy, he was pretty sharp. I just didn't approve of his lack of ethics.

On one occasion I got a hand-me-down laptop from the president of the company as he was getting a newer shinier one. At the time, I didn't need a laptop - I worked entirely on my custom desktop development monster machine and laptops were just too wimpy back then. I eventually used it for product demos at trade shows. Before that I decided to clean-up the disk as it didn't seem to have much space left. Needless to say, when I looked in the recycle bin I was shocked by the porn I found there - male gay and S&M stuff mostly, some bestiality. I deleted a lot of it and then thought I should un-delete it and save it as evidence. I ran a utility that ended up un-deleting a whole lot more, including some really nasty stuff! :omg: :wtf: X| At this point I panicked, wiped and reformatted the drive, installed Windows 98 to replace the old Windows 95 (that was the excuse I gave him for doing it) and lost the final dregs of any respect (not much) for him I had. I depended on his employment for my Green Card and decided, since I had thoroughly destroyed all the evidence, to not report him to the police at that time. :sigh: A couple of years later he fled the country with both the IRS (tax evasion) and the FBI (the rumour was that it was for child pornograhy - no proof but I believed it) in hot pursuit. We all lost our jobs as a result. Luckily, I had recently married a USian and didn't need him for an employment-based green card any more.:cool:

delete this;Ethics. Something I mentioned here, to some company bigshots: they should be very thankful and especially nice to the developers whom they know to have ethics. The havoc we could cause, including taking into account backups, is enormous. We're not like a cashier or teller: we hold the logical keys to their kingdom.

There are some people who get along with everyone. Obviously, from my posts, you know I'm not one of them. But there are people who I don't get along with (and don't want to get along with). Unless one has some very special drugs, I don't think it's normal to get along with everyone - but what do I know. Examples at work include a person who deliberate breaches my trust or are a predator of vulnerable employees. And, of course, the chronic liars. [Chronic idiots aren't included because, well, they're idiots] This could probably be contorted into a survey question, but meanwhile, any comments (or more interestingly, examples!) ? Even those of you who claim you're described in the preceding paragraph

Outside of work, I 'get along' with everyone, or at least pretend to. The medication really helps here. At work, the medication helps, but I can't keep the sarcasm at bay for too long when dealing with a colleague who needs help, or someone make a stupid suggestion/asks for an impossible deadline. My colleague would probably tell you that I can be a real prick at times! :) I can do this because I've been here for almost 20 years and all the code is mine. :) Still, I do realize I have a problem and will continue to overcome this fault! :laugh:

I live in a resort town where the are tons of transient drunks individuals and few of us permanent residence who stay home at night. As I get older, perhaps it is because of my surroundings, perhaps not, but my tolerence of others is ever shrinking. Which I try to keep in check because they all have a right to be here and are probably nice people. I like to come here and enjoy the intelligent banter. Feels like the old home place.

In my 38 year career as a programmer, I've had people I liked (and didn't), people I respected (and didn't). I've always managed to be sufficiently professional to deal with all of them, even though at times it was like gargling with broken glass. Of course, there's always that one exception. "BK" decided that I was a moron, since I worked on a different product line from him. Every time I dealt with him he would lie, misdirect, or ignore the question. When I finally recognized what was going on, I stopped talking to him: in person, in meetings, via e-mail, anything. I simply acted as if he didn't exist. He eventually 'retired' early, when they tried to reassign him to another product and he did absolutely nothing fox six months. This is the first and only person in my career whom I have actively hated. Even the people who were frustrating, less than bright, or just lazy could be dealt with. Not only would I throw this guy under the bus, I'd be driving it. The final piss-in-your-oatmeal of this story is, due to a succession of "workforce adjustments", I am now the maintainer of BK's product. I am generally interested in getting along with everyone, but if someone simply doesn't want to get along (be it a chronic liar or the "I am right and if you expect me to prove that with facts, I'll just yell at you"), I'll ignore said person.

I will leave this new way of thinking for you that I came up with a couple months ago and based on a many thing. Enjoy your life and avoid harm to other. *most every word is subjective **requires continued learning to know what harm to one individual is a pleasure to another. ***and so on ****'your life' could be you or your family/master/king/parent/child... Doing good to other I think only leads to harming your self for doing good to all is unending.

Doing Good - that is enough. And why quantify how much? Your philosophy, I fear, is a bit broken: malforming into virtual black-and-white what you, yourself, recognize as gray. Here's an easier philosophy for life that perhaps usurps the others:

First I must mention, why would you not include the Chronic Idiots? The Chronic Idiots are the first, and most important not to get along with. Granted that goes without saying, but now you have offended them. :) I think this depends heavily on definitions, particularly how you define getting along. If getting along with people means being nice to them and treating them fairly as possible, than I really do believe that you should try to get along with everyone. If it means not tolerating their crap, calling them out when needed and not letting them slack off, than yeah you won't be getting along with everyone. My current job aside, I usually like everybody I work with, and usually develop several lasting friendships at each job. There are always people who, for one reason or another, I actively avoid but when I have worked in a good job they are usually limited. If I was forced to deal with them, I would be as patient as possible with them, but it would be like nails grinding on a chalkboard the whole time. In general, would be highly tiring and trying all at once and I would not like doing it often. My current job, however, is very different. I highly dislike my boss. He was a medium level programmer, with a fair amount of skill, promoted to management who never should have been. He is a horrible leader, a horrible manager and a worse boss. In his current position he quite literally has no redeeming qualities. He has started to stack the department with only people he likes and has known in other jobs, passes all the good assignments to them, and has begun to develop a cult of personality following him that neither challenges his bad decisions, or would be willing to even speak up. And the list of really bad decisions, well, that list is gigantic and some of those have cost a significant amount of money lost. Currently, I don't get along with him or anybody he has brought along. That being said an obvious question comes to mind, why would I continue to work there. A long story short, I usually decide to change jobs every three to five years depending on projects, future and a lot of other factors. As an example, I had one job that the project manager left right after a big project and for the next 9 months we couldn't hold a project manager and had no work. I get really bored with nothing to do, even though I was still getting paid. I have never had a truly horrible boss till my current one though, and I was considering finding other work his first week, but I wanted to make

Long ago I figured out that I'll leave the 'active avoidance' to them. One of us, putting out that effort, is enough. Result is the same - except the satisfaction of knowing they've got one more burden in life. The was a manger->director->fired where I am now. He was nick-named "The Obstructor in Chief" and my ignoring what he said to fix problems was Oh So Satisfying as there's nothing he could do about my making things better. Although way too late, he was finally fired.
