Well, I have hit the big bucks  Bought 10 $2 scratch off lottery tickets today, total return was $168.00! All I have to do is do it again, and again, and again......

Thar's only two possibilities: Thar is life out there in the universe which is smarter than we are, or we're the most intelligent life in the universe. Either way, it's a mighty sobering thought. (Porkypine) via the mind of Walt Kelley (Pogo, I miss you!)

Are they known as the "Stupid Tax" over there as well? Not - and I stress this - meaning that you are stupid, just that most people who buy them are too dumb to realise the size of the odds against them making a long term profit, much less a significant one ...

Yup. You only need to repeat this another 4 or 5 times (depending on your age and lifestyle), and you can retire. Now calculate the odds of doing it... :)

Never heard them called that (not that it is not true). The money goes to a good cause, so I am reasonably okay with my losses (never buy more that $10 worth). I DID hit a $1000 ticket once, had to check it three times to make sure :-D

No, it’s called “innumeracy tax”. We are very polite and don’t call people stupid, unless we have to 😀.

I'm from the south/mid-west US and I hear it called that all the time. Also gambling is illegal where I live so people play the lotto like it's a slot machine. Gets kinda annoying sometimes since tickets are only sold at gas stations. I just want my coffee; continue your gambling later.

I've always called it a voluntary tax. Paid by those who are poor at math, statistics and probabilities.
