So, my current laptop is 3.5 years old, and although I am confident in it, I received a "computer porn" email from my supplier. By that phrase I mean, "omg, the new version is gorgeous! Choice of processors (high end intel or amd), I'll certainly beef up the storage and RAM on my own, spec'd with an NVidia 3080... drool. Okay so this would be for a mainly development laptop. I normally stick with the 15.6" displays. They fit in my laptop backpack and seem to be in the sweet spot. But this new puppy comes with a 17.3" display at 2560x1440 with an nvidia 3080 GPU. :omg: So, for those of you who develop on laptops - insights and opinions into 15.6 vs. 17.3?

Because mine is minimally portable (pre-covid: daily from work to home, and once or twice a week to conference rooms) I'd probably go with the 17 because I'll be using the laptop screen in addition to my external displays; and bigger is better there. If I had to fly for work occasionally 15 for sure, and I'd be seriously looking at if I could find a 13" model with a 45W CPU and enough cooling not to throttle it under extended load. Unless you work from home and never travel, your work environment is entirely remote VMs and cloud native apps reducing your computer to a dumb terminal, or have lengthy build times (10 vs 30s isn't worth the pain, 5 vs 15m would be) I'd recommend against a desktop as a primary machine because of the overhead in keeping two environments running and problems with not having all files synced between them.

high end AMD or Intel processor, starts at 32GB RAM, NVME ssd, 4k 17" 144hz display.... yeah, the specs are nice. What got my attention was the NVidia GPU option and the resolution of the screen... it's a tool, but I was more curious about opinions of the screen size.

That *is* nice. While (IMO) bigger is better, no doubt you'll still have to rescale everything, 'cuz with 4K across 17", nothing's gonna be readable at native resolution.

Interestingly, my display, me and my optometrist are having an argument. I'm nearsighted - not badly so - but... I'm in the process of transitioning to progressives... it's ugly. I've seen people walk up to my laptop and say "how can you see that?". For me, I need crisp text and width of source code. Currently, the laptop I has is 1920x1080 which is okay, but the external screen is 2560x1440. And is amazing at 25" not too big as compared to a 27"... A 17" is larger than my 15.6 but what kills me is when some laptop maker gives you a 17" at 1024x768. I'll pay for the ultra high resolution and scale up the font size.

I have a 17. Because it's a laptop, and when I do dev on it, I don't want to get a headache trying to focus on what looks like 8pt text.

Tweaking the informal survey a bit. For anyone who cares or has excess giggles and grins... this is in regards to a "development" laptop - something with enough screen real-estate to allow you to code. Screen size and resolution? 15.6" and up.

It's a Dell, and it's 1920x1080, which is more than good enough for even my old eyes
