Eddy talked about DOS in the thread below, so let me throw some obligatory nostalgia at you. :) And for youngsters, you'll never know that satisfaction feeling of successfully extending RAM usage for Doom to play (by modifying autoexec.bat) or resolve that IRQ confilct while tuning your brand new Soundblaster 16 :-D

EMM386 or HIMEM? Which Mouse.com do I use? If I load the mouse first, then the soundblaster, I can save 512 bytes ... It took longer to get some games running with mouse and sound than the game took to play!

Thank you for making me feel old. I once saved a NT4 server, booting from a W95 disk, commanding "FDISK /MSB". It fakkin worked.

Yes, actually we had later even more fun in capture the flag in Quake, because of the team vs. team. Or maybe was it an extension of Quake 2 ? My computer was too slow, could not afford better back then, so I always was the flag guardian camping near it with a big machine gun.

Doom and Quake did get expensive - Herself insisted on identical computers so I didn't have an advantage over her. So every upgrade cost me double ... :sigh:

I actually wrote a program that fixed Himem.sys memory leaks. I ran it between each program that loaded itself into the upper memory block. I also reported this bug to Microsoft. The bug was that in the himem area the program arenas, which were 16 byte structures, wouldn't get merged into a larger block of free memory if they were adjacent to each other and had been freed by their respective programs.

And I'll bet these young whippersnappers have never had to low-level format their hard drive. DEBUG: G=C800:5
If you think 'goto' is evil, try writing an Assembly program without JMP.
Okay, I maybe used the DOS debugger once in my life, and certainly not for a low-level format. *bows to master*

I did my own boot menu to select the configuration I wanted and then it booted the PC with my changes. All in a nice .BAT file!
