What's the difference...

... between a rat and a vole? No seriously. :) I have critters in my backyard. They're smallish - smaller than the size of my hand. They're brown-ish grey - mostly brown. They have a white belly, beady eyes and small ears. Their tail is just slightly shorter than their body and roughly the same colour. They can move too - they're skittish and they leap when they run. Any wannabe biologists out there? If they're voles, then that's cool. They're cute and they'll probably start eating my wife's garden. If they're rats, I have to set out traps - and I really don't want to have to do that. :( J

I think voles live in holes you find in fields or your yard. I think I've got voles as well as moles. I'd rather not have moles. (I sound like Dr. Seuss)
