It freezes !

.. No, it is hot outside, but my monitor freezes randomly for a few seconds. Actually I have two monitors, and both of them freeze at the same time. Especially in outlook while writing email. The mouse and keyboard stay responsive, but what I write during the freeze is only displayed when the display is back again. I have not updated windows or the drivers in ages, so it cannot be an update that caused the change. This has been going on for a while now, and I do not know where to start looking, so maybe one of you has an idea...

Have you tried rebooting them ? Remove one monitor and see if the issue is still present. Change monitor cables. Check and clean ports, with a wooden toothpick and some cotton swab and rubbing alcohol (or whatever it is supposed to be safe for computer) and be gentle. Check and update graphic card drivers (and check all your other drivers) Check computer and graphic card temperature.

My ice cream maker ... 30 minutes and it's ready.

30 minutes! Chris’s monitor freezes instantly. If we could combine the two we could get instant ice cream and make a fortune!
If you can't laugh at yourself - ask me and I will do it for you.
I don't have access to Liquid Nitrogen, or it would be instant! :-D

Years ago (running Windows NT 4.x) I had a similar issue, except it took a bit to notice it. When I visited a specific web site the computer would freeze. it was really weird. Only later when I moved to another machine and accessed a shared folder did I notice that the machine wasn't frozen but just the video was. It was crazy. Yep, installed new drivers & tried all that. The solution: Bought a new graphics card and installed it and never had a problem again. Could just be your graphics card is fried. Good luck, I hope you're able to find an answer.

That is my main suspicion ... I am using dual monitor with Svideo and HDMI outputs, so maybe the card also does not like that a lot. My Computer is from 2015, maybe a bit of update would not be bad. But new ones with almost lower specs are about twice as expensive as 7 years ago (you read that well), and finding hw parts compatible with such an old motherboard is also not easy. :sigh:

Actually ... you are not wrong, it insists on installing win11. I could avoid it so far.

Do your updates. Some things get updated without your noticing. Eventually the lack of other updates such as windows and video drivers, etc. cause breakage.

I looked into it : the new drivers are not compatible with the rest of my HW, so not much to expect on this side unfortunately.

:-D I was also trying to understand what the heat source was in my room...

Total guesses 1. Turn off spell/grammar check 2. You have some malware reporting to a CnC server that is offline. Compose emails in notepad and paste them into outlook.
1 is a very good hint, but it did not help. Plus my emails were getting unreadable :-D 2 also good, I run some scans with different tools, and got rid of a few things(thanks!), but nothing that helped for that particular thing

Good hints, I know what I am up to over the weekend now, thanks. I am also starting to wonder if my RAM hasn't some problem as well. Is there any SW to log resource utilization ?

It does sound like the graphics card could be overheating. Does it have fans you could clean? Could you try directing extra cooling towards the graphics card? Good luck

Even liquid nitrogen icecream takes a bit of time to make. Making dippendot's is faster than normal icecream which is faster than softserve; but you need to mix the ingredients while adding the LN2 so it still takes some time (the last step in making LN2DDs is flashfreezing with a lot of it).
