I have experienced an error - grub unable to access /dev/sda - I/O error. After hours trying to find / fix the error another app posted this " backup GPT is corrupt, we will use the primary..." ...say what ?? a. if backup is corrupt and the primary is OK - who cares b. if backup is corrupt and primary is OK why not restore the backup from primary ? c. are the inmates still running the asylum ?

I've worked at places where they did data analysis - read-only stuff - based off the backups. On a different machine, different storage medium, so no impact on production performance. Using the backup also meant that the data only had to be copied off the live media once, and also meant that you were verifying the backup was valid + readable. (In fact at one shop, a LONG time ago, the backup medium was physical tape and there was a 3rd party product that allowed you to write database-like queries - several of them - and run them all on one pass of the tape. So not necessarily as daft as it sounds... ?

I used to do similar Derek (query mainframe tapes ) using a tool called ACL ( I believe it stood for Audit Command Language ) it had a scripting language that was very techie to use but incredibly powerful. You could even do bit manipulation - and this was in the glorious days of EBCDIC - good fun though.

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming “Wow! What a Ride!" - Hunter S Thompson - RIP
