What should be an ideal gift for a secret santa game to a person whom you don't really know?

We are having a game of secret Santa for the Christmas celebration and need to play the role of secret Santa to a random person. What gift should I choose when I don't know the person very well?

Something neutral: chocolates, perhaps, fancy soaps - something your wouldn't normally buy for yourself so there is a good chance they wouldn't buy for themselves either. Or ... you could use this as an opportunity to find out something about them, and select a gift based on what you find out? Which would you rather get? Neutral and (probably) boring, or something that shows the giver took some time and put some thought into it?
