Anyone seen NASA's latest shuttle wing test?

"A piece of foam fired at the replica at about 500 mph punched a hole 16-inches in diameter in the reinforced carbon material," - "The foam hit with the force of 1 ton and " - This sounds like extremly dense foam to me :confused: Regardz Colin J Davies

When you have a specific result you are after then eventually, given enough tests, you will come up with that result. I'm not belittling the experiments or the effort to find what went wrong in any way - it's just that it reminds me of my physics labs where we knew the answer and would go to great lengths to ensure our impartial experiments produced the answer that would give us a 'pass' :) cheers, Chris Maunder

The sad thing is that "NASA's shuttle team knew about the foam strike shortly after launch, but presumed the light material could not pierce the tough carbon panels that protect the wings." :| When about science, I know or I don't know, but I don't believe.

Absolutely incredible that it took thousands of engineers nearly 30 years to perform that little test. "Gee, I wonder what would happen if some of the foam broke off from the tank and hit the wing? Maybe we should test that.." Makes me feel a little better about my sorry testing habits ... "More capitalism, please..."

I actually decided that the 1 tonne should have been a mega-newton and the 500 mph = 800kph or .... Anyhow I determined the foam would have a mass of 41 kg(m) which seems darn dense to punch a 16 inch diameter hole. I mean dense for foam .:confused: Regardz Colin J Davies
