And I think they might have even been on one of the pinned posts at the top a bit ago before they moved to this one?

If you look closely, the "Parent line" doesn't run from the orphan messages to the same message as the one above it. What happened was that the user posted a "here's some code I found, it doesn't do what I wanted" which I answered, then he deleted it so his teacher wouldn't find out. That deleted the "root question" but the children remained and look like they are part of the question above. A glitch in the matrix is all - you can't normally delete a message with responses so it's probably a timing issue between different servers in the farm. If it really freaks you out, I could deleted the orphans to tidy it all up, but it happens so rarely that it's not worth the hamsters putting huge amounts of time into trying to fix properly.
