I locked my chickens up last night, and I missed one of them. I found her this morning, outside and injured, her comb pretty much chewed/ripped off. Luckily she wasn't bleeding heavily, but she's not really eating. I'd take her to the vet, but hubby has the car until he gets back into town today. I don't usually drive so it's not normally an issue, but I may need to call the in-laws. I just had FIL over here yesterday about a power issue. I feel terrible about this. Poor thing. :((

You need to get a dog. One to protect the chicken.

My FIL looked at her. He's had a lot more animals than I have. He says he doesn't think she was attacked. He said if something got her bad enough to get her comb, it would have gotten the rest of her. He thinks she got caught in something - maybe the fence. It would explain things better, actually, but I still feel bad. I never heard her or if i did they always make so much noise over nothing anyway I didn't look. I don't know when it happened either.

Any evidence of a large slingshot or small catapult?

That would be Rose, not Dorothy. Rose is the escape plotter.

We have dogs - one of them ate the chickens, we now buy eggs from the market.

I'm sorry to hear of her injuries! I'm hoping she'll recover nicely. I also hope you won't be too hard on yourself. Animals sometimes do silly things and can trick you. Independent little cusses sometimes.

Baby her if you can. She survived an attack; that's something. I lost many to crafty critters, all of which love the taste of chicken, but I found that the survivors of attacks became either very good alarm systems for the rest, or ever better at being quiet and unseen by predators.

In-laws had 3 chickens - they forgot to lock them one night. One fox later and you know why I used the past tense in my previous sentence. You can be glad that yours is still alive !

What a diverse group that hangs here We go from discussing Bruce Schneier to talking about Chickens Not sure if any of the same people were in each discussion Still kind of amazing My Greyhound was always fascinated by Chickens he mostly watched never wanted to play with them not sure he would have attacked them Can't say the same for any rabbit that wondered on to the property
