IMHO, coders need not be experts. Its sufficient if coders are able to achieve the customer's requirements (error handling included) with the coding knowledge they have, and the attitude of learnability.

Plus the ability to evolve a solution, potentially having one coder pick up where another left off. This brings to mind the great quote:

        Joni Mitchell said:

That's one thing that's always, like, been a difference between, like, the performing arts, and being a painter, you know. A painter does a painting, and he paints it, and that's it, you know. He has the joy of creating it, it hangs on a wall, and somebody buys it, and maybe somebody buys it again, or maybe nobody buys it and it sits up in a loft somewhere until he dies. But he never, you know, nobody ever, nobody ever said to Van Gogh, 'Paint a Starry Night again, man!' You know? He painted it and that was it.

Unlike a painter, a developer can (though may not) keep tweaking a program -- v1, v2, etc. Yet unlike, the musician, we don't have to start fresh each time we want to make improvements. And still unlike the composer, we can feel confident that the computer will perform our magnum opus exactly as we have instructed.

I've been asked to code the same thing again. And again. And again. I don't think it makes me Joni Mitchell. :-D

The coders among us are not performing artists; they are craftsmen/women. A master tailor may produce coats for his entire life, each differing in style, size, etc. A musician may play the same repertoire, trying to achieve perfection in playing the pieces. A composer may try writing music in differing styles. I would claim that our craft is closer to the master tailor than to the musician or composer.

To be clear, I don't disagree. In fact that was basically my point. :)

I have developed the same kind of thing more than once at times. A "set of classes/methods for working with ADO.net" for example is something I've done several times and will likely do again. But each time is different, with a new set of requirements, each building on the experience of the previous and improving.

And yet, she also said, "you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone" -- which (in my opinion) applies to your work with tiny embedded components.

Standard normal distribution. For any group of people, with enough numbers, there will be those that are substantially above the norm and those that are below it. I believe there are several studies that attempted to measure this related to producing code. One would need to carefully look at each study to determine how they measured the results. Finding them are not easy since there are attempts to monetize the measurement along with a vast number of opinions as to how to create that (which one would could compare to similar attempts to make better teachers.)

your criterion: specialized physical ability ? why should the "girl" need to be another gender ?

re/ 1st yes along w/ the study of advanced Physics etc. it is greatly pleasurable when the billiard balls fly as intended . as for piano i do not know but assume likewise great pleasure upon an expertly played Chopin Sonata . re/ 2nd yes as i do not wish to wear dresses .
