Is anyone out there into AI?
-
Im a huge computer geek (at least, i like to think so) and my dad has a phd in instructional desigh and a doctorate in psychology, so i've been into both for a long time. Im a comptuer science major in undergrad school, and, hopefully, i plan to get a BS in comp. sci and a phd in psychology. I think the best correlation to the 2 things i enjoy most is AI. Just wondering if anyone out there has (or has had) any experience in AI, or if they might have any comments on it. *.* cin >> knowledge;
I am into a field akin to that - artificial life. I'm working on a project that "evolves" little critters as the swim around on your monitor. I got interested in it way back when that first "Life" program got mentioned. I've got mine built in layers - with a surface layer that can contain orgs (my organisms) and overlaid on that is a "matter" layer. The matter can be food, poison, etc. The orgs move randomly at first, but can mutate when they reproduce resulting in different movement techniques, fight or flight weightings, mating displ;ay, etc. When 2 orgs meet, they might fight, they might flee, one may try to eat another (some are veggiesa some are predators) it is sort of cool when they start doing things you didn't expect! I'm going to live forever or die trying!

thats awesome, are you doing more of the coding side of it or the interaction? or are you doing all of it? Also, the first question that comes to mind is whether if a pred. meats a smaller fish, will he automatically eat it, or does he sometimes eat it, sometimes pass it... see, that is one fo the things that interests me, the impredictability of life, and how we're coming into an age that we can mimic chance decisions in programming. I'd love to see that program when youre done with it, if its open to the public. *.* cin >> knowledge;

I'm doing the whole thing. It is a sort of learn as you go thing. I have made it open enough that new behaviours can be added quickly. I hadn't thought about whether a predator org (porg) would automatically consume the veggie org (vorg). I like the idea of that! So.... my next addition to this will be adding "escape" characteristics to the "genome" of the vorgs. This will allow random mutations to alter their escape abilities. This is an entire area I hadn't even gotten into. I had basically been treating the vorgs as movable plants so that when a porg intercepted one it was consumed. But I can see that I really need to add that unpredictability - but like all of my behaviours, it will be based on their "genes". The other thing I am currently working on is "senses" vorgs will give off scents and the duration of their scents will be determined by their genes. This way porgs can mutate to where they will begin following the vorgs scent from areas of lower concentration to areas of higher concentration. I'm going to live forever or die trying!

www.humanaiproject.org "Dream as if you'll live forever; live as if you'll die tomorrow." - James Dean(ISTP)heh, to be exact, im a computer science major, with a minor in psychology. but, as soon as i get my BS in compsci, i want to get a phd in psychology. but tis really irrelevant now, i'e only taken a 2 psychology courses, but im taking a brain and behavior class in a few months, and following that, child development. so, im on the bandwaggon, anxiously awaiting the knowledge. :) *.* cin >> knowledge;

I caught the name of this thread, and for some off reason "Ass Investigation" struck me when I saw AI in the subject line. ;P I really must get a life.

I wrote a big ole BASIC program that did this several years ago. Quite cool watching how the little critters would act. Post an article, I'd love to read it.

I like the user interface/AI (aka Agents) part of it. A tool, computer, is suppose to help you do something easier, but some programs don't do very much (aka web browsers) so I implement the features needed in to my web browser. http://404Browser.com[^] -Steven Hicks
