nope. For me, it's so I can take the laptop downstairs and stay connected to my lan (and the internet). Well, I finally got a wireless router/pcmmcia card. I must admit, it's pretty cool. I got a NetGear WGR614 router and a NetGear WG311 card for my laptop. I can do 802.11b/g at 2.4ghz and a max connect speed of 54mbps. It supports 40/64/128/152-bit WEP, has MAC address filtering, and other goodies. I liked it so much that I ordered the same router and the WG511 (desktop PCI version of the WG311) for my dad's house. Well, I finally got a wireless router/pcmmcia card. I must admit, it's pretty cool. I got a NetGear WGR614 router and a NetGear WG311 card for my laptop. I can do 802.11b/g at 2.4ghz and a max connect speed of 54mbps. It supports 40/64/128/152-bit WEP, has MAC address filtering, and other goodies. I liked it so much that I ordered the same router and the WG511 (desktop PCI version of the WG311) for my dad's house. Stupidly, I took the 'Indoor Range' of 802.11b to be correct on the package. I don't think they take walls into the equation, since it drops to 30% signal the second I go to the next room :suss: I could do with a 2nd AP, but they are a little expensive just for 40% more signal. btw, I use the Belkin AP and Notebook card.

I got my dad to go wifi for his new laptop. He's picking up a router today. And I can finally toss this piece of crap linksys in the trash. It has this self defence mechanism to defend itself from linksys NICs (seriously I have fried 2 ports with 2 different linksys NICs and 2 different cables). Also if it doesn't feel like serving ips etc it doesn't. :rolleyes: But he is getting NetGear MR814. Matt Newman

I don't think they take walls into the equation, since it drops to 30% signal the second I go to the next room :suss: I could do with a 2nd AP, but they are a little expensive just for 40% more signal. btw, I use the Belkin AP and Notebook card.

The "g" does about 100 feet thru three concrete and steel walls before the signal dropping off and the "b" does over 300 feet with a signal booster (thru two walls). Very easy to install, setup and is very reliable. Steve

Even a 3dB gain would significantly improve the range, and they're cheap. My wireless card is my Internet connection, and it hits an AP 6 miles away very nicely with the 18dB antenna I have attached to it.;P
