Curved monitor: I think I've made a mistake

Decided to drop my two monitors setup in favour a single 34" curved monitor. Technically, all works fine but my brain doesn't seem to like the curvature. It's like it somehow interferes with the z-order on screen and some windows seem "behind" just because they are further away from me. It's all a bit difficult to describe. Questions are: has anyone else had these strange sensations with curved monitors or it's just me who's weird? Secondly, are you using curved monitors and do you enjoy them?

Never owned them, but I've always felt it was just the latest gimmick the manufacturers were trying to push onto consumers to convince them they needed to replace their TVs. ChatGPT can't even give me a straight answer as to the proportion of curved monitor sales vs traditional ones. I suspect they're about to be forgotten like 3D TVs are. Of course YMMV, you may have a *great* application for it in which case I'm happy for anyone who finds himself in that situation.

I see no use for a curved monitor when I can spread my desktop over multiple monitors and "angle" them any way I want. A single view that is greater than (say) 27", means you have to back up (or swivel your eyes / head) at some point in order to take it all in (depending on your eyes).

This one is not a TV replacement. I've got it only as a work monitor. Figured all that curve would make my eyes stay a constant distance from screen. As I said, might have made a mistake.

Yes, while I didn't have that particular issue, what happened was my visual system started to compensate for the curvature so ultimately the monitors appeared flat. When looking at an actual flat screen, it appeared to bow out. Who knows what it did to my world perception. I ditched them eventually, it took months for my visual system to recover to where flat was flat. They should put a warning on these things that it'll f*** with how you see things. :mad:

I have never used a curved monitor and have no intention to do so in this lifetime or the next. :) However, a couple of developers I have worked with in the past had used them. One liked it, the other did not. The one that did not like the curved monitor went back to their prior dual 27inch monitor setup. Don't really know why the one did not like the single curved monitor. I currently use both at home and at work, a dual 27inch monitor setup. The only way to fly IMHO. Cheers.

I think the responses you have received so far and more unusual than not. The fact is they sell a LOT and new models continue to be released. That indicates clearly they are quite popular among the general public. I have one and I like it quite a bit. Unfortunately it doesn't have quite enough pixels for me to use for development but it works good with games. At this point, I am unlikely to get a bigger one since the ones I want cost considerably more than two monitors of acceptable resolution and performance and I don't think that cost is worth the benefits of a single monitor.

mine (see below) is not that expensive and I got it with a deal (15% off) back then I paid 390€ or so.

When I lost my right eye in 2020 I shopped around for a new, larger monitor since my remaining left eye is crappy. I looked at both flat and curved monitors in the stores. I chose a flat monitor for my development machine. Curved monitors are great for watching movies because your visual field seems a little more immersive. I didn't like the effect when I had a wall of text on the screen. It was also really bad when I tried editing graphics because of the distortion.

I think one's demands are different when it comes to programming and text editing, versus gaming. Most gaming action is focused on the center of the screen ... and only the cat presents a distraction. (I wouldn't use 2+ monitors to play a game, while I find it "impossible" to program with only 1).

I remember dropping the old CRT screen, that was curved the other direction, for a flat screen. It took a while to get used. The flat screen seemed to curve inwards in the beginning. If it's just about text you'll probably get used. If you're doing technical/geometrical drawings it's probably a bad idea to get used.

I've got a single large 34" curved monitor. It works well for monitors because you're at the center of the curve and so all points of the screen are the same distance away from your eyes. It works poorly on TV, because multiple people watch TV at the same time and they can't all be in the center at the same time.

I have two Samsung LC24F390 monitors side-by-side and notice nothing weird at all.

^ This. If there's just one person who needs to be sitting in the "sweet spot"...then great. But then to replicate the multi-monitor setup I currently have (4K 40" TV + 2 additional 1080P monitors), I'd need to stack a few of these monitors one on top of the other.
